Advising is a process that is fundamentally related to student retention and success. Specifically, advising helps students build solid educational plans, and assists them in executing those plans. Advising helps and empowers students to approach their education in an organized and meaningful way. Creating a learner-centered environment to inform students of the nature of the Advisor/Student/Faculty relationship, and the roles and responsibilities of each.
Specific Duties
- Meet with students to provide developmental advising that enables them to define and develop realistic educational and career goals, and plan an educational program consistent with their abilities, interests and resources;
- Monitor students’ progress towards meeting their educational goals and proactively contact students at critical points in their academic development;
- Create a learner-centered environment to inform students of the nature of the Advisor/Student/Faculty relationship, and the roles and responsibilities of each
- Provide students with information related to College policies and procedures;
- Orient students to services available at CNC and within the community.
- Help students to understand the complete requirements of their program(s) of interest, including admission requirements and prerequisites, and to develop an academic plan to facilitate the completion of that program
- Review and recommend policy changes
- Monitor, prioritize and answer inquires submitted through various communications channels such as email and phone
- Understand the scope of developmental advising and using different approaches to advising to support the student through admissions, program selection, program requirements and graduation;
- Teach students how to understand and use advising tools (degree planner, program planning pages, CNC calendar, website);
- Investigate, assess and develop strategy with current CNC students wanting to gain admission to another program at CNC
- Investigate and problem-solving special student situations;
- Plan and facilitate workshops and events in support of student academic success (e.g. New Student Advising workshops, Academic planning workshops, workshops for at-risk students);
- Coordinate and participate in advising events, which include but is not limited Open House, New Student Registration, New Student Orientation, New Student Advising workshops;
- Maintain a thorough understanding of academic policies and procedures as it relates to admission, and academic standing;
- Is sensitive to the appropriate time and need to refer students who are experiencing personal/social/cultural conflicts and educational/career indecision to Counselling and/or the Wellness Coach
- Develop student self-help resources and advising resources in collaboration with key stakeholders
- Help students develop self-advocacy skills when dealing with difficult situations with faculty, staff or their peers.
- Serve on College committees when required;
- Participate in and follow stated professional standards (e.g. NACADA, CACUSS Core Competencies);
- Participate in institutional professional development, maintain an awareness of College-wide initiatives (including new programs), and integrate new programming/pilots when possible
- You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners and communities.
- You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
- Other related duties as required.
International Student Advising, which may include:
- Advise students on IRCC requirements and maintaining compliance
- Advocate for international students in dealing with emerging issues.
- Provide information to international students regarding study permit renewals, visa renewals, and post-graduate work permit applications
- Discuss the results of placement assessments (ACDU), English Language Placement Testing and/or assessments of English and Math skills (SRA) and the consequences of the results on the student’s educational goals
Skills & Qualifications
- Minimum of a four year degree or equivalent
- Minimum two (2) years previous experience in providing academic advising preferred
- Demonstrated cross cultural experience
- Awareness, sensitivity and demonstrated ability to relate well and work effectively with multicultural issues.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to interact with students, staff and the general public, in a professional manner
- Ability to work independently and under constant pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Essential to be competent with a variety of computer systems, able to maintain necessary databases and prepare own correspondence and reports, etc.
- Excellent problem solving and organizational skills.
- Extensive knowledge of community resources, post-secondary programs, systems and procedures, and systemic barriers.
Qualifications Preferred:
- Registered International Student Immigration Advisor (RISIA) training through Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC), or willing to obtain this certification within one year of appointment
- Minimum two (2) years previous experience in providing academic advising preferred
- Post Secondary education courses in cross-cultural or intercultural communication preferred
- Knowledge of a language other than English would be an asset
