Tenure-track Assistant Professor Position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics and 2D Quantum Materials
Job description: The Department of Physics of the University of Ottawa seeks applications for a tenure-track position in experimental condensed matter physics and 2D quantum materials, starting in 2024. The bilingual (French and English) candidate will grow an outstanding, externally funded research program in quantum materials and show potential for successful teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
The selected candidate will build or expand partnerships and research collaborations within University of Ottawa’s Nexus for Quantum Technologies (NexQT) Institute (https://www.uottawa.ca/research-innovation/quantum-institute), industry, colleagues in the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering as well as with leading governmental, non-governmental, and educational organizations located in Canada and, especially, in the National Capital Region. The candidate will interact with and complement our current group of materials physics experimentalists and theorists with connections to quantum-focused photonics. The candidate should demonstrate an interest and expertise in epitaxial growth, characterization, and study of 2D materials and heterostructures. In that regard, the candidate will take advantage of and lead a state-of-the-art MOCVD growth facility for 2D materials (Aixtron CCS). The candidate will also benefit from the University of Ottawa’s research support facilities providing users with open access to cutting-edge nanofabrication, low temperature, and materials characterization tools.
Title of the position: Assistant or Associate Professor
Duties: The functions of a member of the academic staff include, in varying proportions, bilingual teaching activities, scholarly activities pertaining to research and/or professional work, academic service activities, and supervision of graduate students.
Rank and salary: Regular tenure-track academic appointment in the Faculty of Science, with a salary consistent with the collective agreement of the Association of Professors of the University of Ottawa. Exceptional candidates at higher academic ranks are also encouraged to apply. The base salary for assistant professors is $89,622.
Requirements:
- The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Physics or in a related discipline.
- The candidate is expected to lead a vigorous research program and contribute to teaching in all undergraduate as well as graduate programs in physics.
- Language: The University of Ottawa is proud to be the largest bilingual (English-French) university in North America, and considers bilingualism to be one of its distinguishing characteristics. At the time of hiring, the selected candidate must have an active knowledge of French. The selected candidate must be able to work and teach in both official languages at the time of obtaining tenure. Bilingualism at the time of hiring is therefore an asset.
Location of work: Department of Physics, University of Ottawa, STEM Complex, 150 Louis Pasteur, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada K1N 6N5.
Application: Applications should be submitted electronically through the University of Ottawa Academic Careers website (Academic and Executive Careers). Candidates should include the following in their application:
- A cover letter, including a statement on the level of bilingualism
- An up-to-date curriculum vitae (please include any personal circumstances and/or career interruptions such as parental or sick leaves that may have impacted your research trajectory; these will be taken into consideration in the selection process)
- A research plan (~5 pages)
- A statement of teaching philosophy (~2 pages, written in French)
- A statement on equity, diversity, and inclusion philosophy and concrete practices (~1 page)
- The names of three people who may be contacted by the University for letters of reference.
