The Department of Computer Science and Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Statistics position with a focus on statistical methods with applications to social sciences. This is an academic year appointment to commence in Fall 2025. We are seeking a dynamic scholar whose research applies statistical methods to the analysis of complex social phenomena using computational techniques. The ideal candidate will contribute to interdisciplinary research and education, bridging statistics with the social sciences through innovative use of computational and statistical tools.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a faculty appointment in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics that will equally divide teaching, research, and service duties between the interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Computational Social Science (CSS) program in the College of Arts & Science and the Statistics programs in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics.
The selected candidate will be expected to teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate statistics courses, develop new courses at both levels for the CSS and Statistics programs, maintain an active research program, secure external funding, advise and supervise graduate students in statistics, computational social science, participate in service activities, and provide consulting services to students and faculty in the department, college, and university. The tenure home will be in the Department of Computer Science and Statistics.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ph.D. with a concentration in statistics or closely related fields by time of appointment
August 2025.
2. Demonstrated ability to apply statistical and computational techniques and tools to social science data.
3. Demonstrated ability to conduct academic research and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
4. Demonstrated ability and interest in teaching graduate and/or undergraduate courses in statistics.
5. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain an externally funded research program in statistics, computational social science and/or related fields.
6. Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching and scholarship.
7. Demonstrated interpersonal communication skills.
8. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
9. Demonstrated proficiency in English oral communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. While all areas of methodological and applied research in statistics, computational social science or related fields will be fully considered, candidates with research interests in areas such as Bayesian methods, computational environmental or social statistics, data mining, dimension reduction methods, experimental design, functional data analysis, image data analysis, large dataset analysis, machine learning, text analysis, meta-analysis, neural data analysis, network data analysis, time series analysis, and tensor data analysis are especially encouraged to apply.
2. Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
3. Demonstrated ability and/or experience advising and/or mentoring students.
4. Experience or interest in interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with social sciences (e.g., sociology, political science, and economics).
5. Demonstrated interest in developing collaborative research and/or consulting to support the interdisciplinary nature of programs within the Department, College, and the University as a whole.
6. Demonstrated commitment and/or interest to participate in service and outreach committees.
7. Ability to improve recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students, particularly students from underrepresented communities.
