As the Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH) Community Educator, you will have the opportunity to have a direct and meaningful impact within Alberta Health Services. Working collaboratively with a diverse team, the Community Educator delivers comprehensive sexuality education programs to a variety of school and community groups, which may include professional and vulnerable groups. Session topics may include discussion of topics such as puberty, self-care and screenings, contraception, STBBI, pregnancy support options (pregnancy continuation and parenting, adoption, pregnancy termination), consent, sexual assault, sexual orientation and gender diversity and healthy relationships. The Educator also supports the development of resources and projects with the Education and Health Promotion team as time and expertise allow. A vital part of this role would involve you bringing your lived experience and deep understanding of working with people disproportionately impacted by health disparities. Practicing within a culture of caring and behaviorally demonstrating the values of compassion, accountability, respect, excellence and safety, the Educator is a key voice in providing practical and real-time information to the Education and Health Promotion team regarding trends, needs and areas of interest observed in front line teaching work. This is a benefit-eligible casual employee (BECE) position. Availability must be given as per the HSAA Collective agreement. Shift length can vary depending on session bookings. Hours are primarily daytime hours, but occasional evening sessions are needed. Flexibility in hours throughout the work week is an asset.

Description:

As a Community Educator, you will be responsible for delivery of comprehensive patient-centered education and health promotion in area(s) of expertise to patients (clients, residents), families and internal or external care providers. Education may be presented formally (classroom) and/or informally (one-on-one) and in a variety of settings from clinical, classroom, and community. This will include building partnerships with and acting as a resource to specialty services partners, community partners, and other AHS zone programs and staff. You may identify education opportunities, assist in content development, analyze and evaluate services, and work with internal staff to schedule classes and identify locations. You will build new partnerships, implement new initiatives and promote your assigned program.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of bachelor’s degree in a health or education related field.

Additional Required Qualifications:

Training in the field of teaching & learning and group facilitation. Minimum 1 year’s recent experience in group facilitation/teaching. References supporting a strong skillset in the following areas: communication, (written, verbal and interpersonal), teaching, facilitation and presentation, critical thinking, effective time management & organization. Training/Education and/or understanding in the areas of Population and Public Health, comprehensive sexuality education, trauma-informed care, harm-reduction & stigma awareness approaches to education, health care or social service provision. References supporting the ability to participate effectively as a team member, including the ability to accept direction & feedback; work creatively with initiative, withholding judgement & adaptability; manage a variety of values and perspectives with tact, diplomacy & sensitivity to diverse populations & circumstances.

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge, training and application of educational theory, youth learning & development, human sexuality, 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusive practice, cultural awareness & humility. Lived/worked experience in creating safer spaces for people including all sexual orientations, gender identities, people of colour, Indigenous people, people with disabilities or newcomers. Lived/work experience with populations disproportionately impacted by health disparities. Experience with professional writing.
