Requirements and Nature of Work:

The Research Assistant (RA) will support Professors Fafard and Griset in research activities related to the areas of security and the global governance of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Specifically, working with colleagues in the Global Strategy Lab, this program of research examines the political, economic, and health priorities for reducing the global burden of AMR. The program of research also involves supporting Professors Fafard and Griset, and Professor Alexandra Gheciu, Director of the Centre of International Policy Studies in advancing our understanding of the role of science diplomacy in national and global security.

Under the supervision of Dr. Fafard, the RA will:

  • Support projects on public health policy and governance, including examining the previous research on the governance of global AMR, bilateral science cooperation between international states, and investigating the role of scientific evidence in public health policymaking.
  • Conduct desk research, including statutory analyses, literature searches, and article summaries and syntheses.
  • Working with other research staff at the University of Ottawa and in the Global Strategy Lab, provide administrative and logistical support for research projects, such as scheduling, travel arrangements, budgeting, managing data collection, and communications.
  • Coordinate with international researchers and diplomats in French and English.

Specific research activities the RA will be engaged in:

  • Contributing to the writing and editing of manuscripts;
  • Gathering data from government agencies and public health organizations;
  • Reading and summarizing legislation and policy documents;
  • Searching for, summarizing, and synthesizing academic articles and grey literature;
  • Managing sources using reference management software;
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Current graduate student in the School of Policy Studies & International Affairs, Political Studies, or International Development & Global Studies at the University of Ottawa.
  • Undergraduate education in Political Science or International Development Studies.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is a requirement.
  • Demonstrated interest in public health, public policy, public administration, and/or international relations; previous course experience in these areas is an asset.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social science concepts, theories, and research methods.
  • Demonstrated skills, experience, and familiarity with conducting literature reviews.
  • Demonstrated analytic skills for understanding, sorting, and categorizing complex information.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team with researchers, students, and staff.
  • Demonstrated eagerness to learn and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
