Job Summary

The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science (IKBFoS) is recognized nationally and internationally to be engaged in globally-significant research and innovative programming. The IKBFoS is currently home to over 3000 students and 100 faculty members organized into four departments, with 30 undergraduate programs and 10 graduate programs. 

The Coordinator, Curriculum & Academic Programs will work closely with the Manager, Curriculum & Academic Programs and the Associate Dean, Curriculum, Teaching & Learning on the development, assessment, and enhancement of broad-based and diversified educational programs (undergraduate, graduate, and non-credit), initiatives, and projects within the IKBFoS.

Specifically, this position will assist the Faculty in achieving the target set by the campus in response the 2019 Quality Assurance Process Audit response to have program learning outcomes and assessment plans in place for all undergraduate and graduate programs by 2029.

Organizational Status
This position reports to the Manager, Curriculum & Academic Programs and takes strategic direction from the Associate Dean, Curriculum, Teaching & Learning.
Work Performed

  • Coordinates the development of formal and informal projects to support the advancement of the Curriculum & Academic Program portfolio.

  • Coordinates and assists with program/curriculum design. This includes co-facilitating interviews and focus groups, drafting interview/focus group protocols, drafting and sending surveys, organizing data in databases, and conducting data analysis.

  • Develops course and program learning outcomes, lecture materials, course activities, and assessments ensuring alignment with course, program, and degree level outcomes.

  • Assists in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of outcomes-based assessment including: co-chairing meetings with key stakeholders, drafting project and evaluation plans, and drafting data collection protocols.

  • Liaises with subject matter experts in the design and delivery of tutorials and workshops related to curriculum projects.

  • Works collaboratively with instructors, department heads and staff to support the adaptation and adoption of curricular initiatives.

  • Conducts regular project meetings to monitor project tasks, address issues, communicate with team members, and facilitate decision-making.

  • Identifies and develops documentation (e.g. instructions for implementing experiential learning, Indigenization) and resources (e.g. websites) to meet the needs of faculty in IKBFoS.

  • Makes recommendations for policies, systems and organizational practices to support exceptional curriculum development and academic program management.

  • Prepares and writes reports.

  • Conducts research and analyzes data.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This role must exercise tact, professional judgement, discretion and initiative in dealings with collaborators and stakeholders. Inappropriate actions or judgment could damage the Faculty’s working relationships and credibility, incur inappropriate costs, and jeopardize the Faculty’s ability to offer quality programming. Errors could have a negative impact on the reputation of programs, the Faculty, and the University.

Supervision Received
This position reports to the Manager, Curriculum & Academic Programs and takes strategic direction from the Associate Dean, Curriculum, Teaching & Learning.
Supervision Given
Will provide guidance to approximately four student employees (one per each department) starting in the second year of the project.
Minimum Qualifications
University degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education

  • Experience in educational program planning, design, implementation, and evaluation.

  • Experience in course development and writing course learning outcomes an asset.

  • Demonstrated experience gathering and analyzing data, determining implications, developing reports, and making strategic recommendations for action.

  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, assess, synthesize, and communicate information.

  • Familiarity with the academic calendar, the academic structure of the University, and the UBC curriculum approval process is an asset.

  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. Demonstrated technical-writing, editing, and proof-reading skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and processes.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty.

  • High degree of initiative in self-directed improvement and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to maintain accuracy and high attention to detail.

  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

  • Project management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet multiple deadlines.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, diplomacy, tact, and discretion.

  • Excellent problem-solving and organizational skills.
