What you’ll do 

The Faculty of Education, Health and Human Development at Capilano University invites applications for a non-regular faculty appointment in the Department of Early Childhood Care and Education. Capilano University is located on the territories of the LíỈwat, xʷməθkʷəỷəm (Musqueam), shíshálh (Sechelt), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and SəỈílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Non-regular faculty appointments may include course instruction at all Capilano University campuses: North Vancouver, kálax-ay Sunshine Coast, and Squamish, as well as broader community engagement, partnerships and initiatives of the Early Childhood Care and Education program.

The Early Childhood Care and Education program stands in partnership with Early Childhood Educators of British Columbia (ECEBC) in promoting early childhood education as a profession. The department is committed to working towards the professionalization of early childhood educators in a universal, accessible, inclusive early childhood system that views early childhood education as the right of the child as a citizen. We are early childhood faculty, academics and researchers who are working with reconceptualist perspectives of early childhood education. We understand pedagogy as situated in the discipline of social science and the education of educators needs to be primarily steeped in educational and pedagogical matters. This education does not teach future educators how to apply knowledges and how to use methods that sustain the present system and current conditions. Rather, their education supports them on the challenging tasks of (1) understanding our current conditions, (2) imagining and worlding less oppressive, less violent, less destructive futures, and (3) enacting these possible futures through lively and experimental curricula with children and families.

We work with children, families, and communities to co-create pedagogical spaces where all lives can flourish. The early childhood educator holds a disposition to listen, to be open, to challenge ourselves to think otherwise, to stay with the troubles and to live joyfully. We consider that in their pedagogical responsibilities, educators understand that children and families are differently situated in relation to local and global contexts, and live in complex interdependent relations with others (humans and more-than-human). Such understanding involves actively challenging normative notions of childhood and family composition. Educators not only make pedagogical decisions, but also create lively curricula that acknowledge and respond to children’s and families’ complex situational circumstances and interdependencies. Candidates will have the ability to engage in, or have a demonstrated record of research, teaching, and community engagement in reconceptualist early childhood care care and education.

Nature and Scope of Work

As an NREG appointment:

• This non-regular (NREG) faculty appointment will start May 1, 2024, as instructor for the Summer Term, May 6 – June 21, 2024. Course assigned: EDUC 173, Curriculum Development 1, scheduled Tuesday and Thursdays, 8:30 a.m. – 3:50 p.m., North Vancouver Campus, Capilano University. (Please note that future course instruction in a subsequent term is subject to course instruction, scheduling, and relevant experience and scholarship required for individual course instruction.).
• NREG faculty positions may include courses located at the campuses of North Vancouver kálax-ay Sunshine Coast, and Squamish, as well as broader community engagement and initiatives of the Early Childhood Care and Education program.
• In the academic terms in which there is course assignment, NREG faculty are required to maintain regularly scheduled office hours on campus to be available to meet with students.
• In the academic terms in which there is course assignment, participation in associated department activities as required within ancillary duties, including but not limited to events and meetings within the University community, ECCE committee work, and ECCE program development.

What you’ll bringRequired Qualifications & Experience

• Masters degree in Early Childhood Education or in a related field;
• BC ECE Registry Certification as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE), Infant/Toddler Educator (ITE), or Special Needs Educator (SNE) required or eligibility will be based on current certification.
• 5-10 years of teaching experience in a licensed early childhood program, or other early years setting working with children 0-5 years old.
• Evidence of research and/or scholarly work in reconceptualized early years practice.
• Demonstrated evidence of working with reconceptualist curriculum frameworks, and active engagement with living inquiry and narrative processes in curriculum-making with children.
• Demonstrated evidence of community engagement, such as early childhood planning tables, non-profit boards within the education and/or social service sector, (ie: early childhood care and education, food security, housing, seniors).
• Active engagement with and commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action.
• Demonstrated understanding of the current issues in the early years in British Columbia and Canada.
• Demonstration of active membership in provincial, national and international early years scholarly, professional, advocacy and or research groups.
• Evidence of ability and commitment to leadership and collaborative work.
