Your role

CBC News Network is looking for a creative Rundown Producer who is part of the team that plans and crafts CBC News Morning Live with Heather Hiscox.

This position requires full-time assignment to an early morning shift starting at 2:30 am.

Your main responsibility is to create the morning show’s roadmap, curating a linear experience that Canadians can depend on to feel informed and even entertained as they begin their day. This role is crucial in fulfilling CBC News Network’s mission to prioritize live, breaking news that resonates with and is relevant to Canadians across the country.

We are looking for a creative, critical thinker with a strong editorial vision and an audience-first mindset. You should be passionate about pitching engaging content ideas, bringing your unique experiences and perspectives to the table. You’re someone who actively consumes news programs and video, staying curious and open to new ideas, approaches and viewpoints. Adaptability is key—you thrive in fast-paced environments where you may need to adjust content from hour-to-hour or even minute-to-minute.

While breaking news is central to our mission, you understand the importance of producing programs that balance urgency with captivating stories and meaningful conversations. As a confident editorial leader, you are decisive, whether refining story presentations or guiding editorial choices, and you’re eager to mentor and inspire your team along the way.

You have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience. You must also have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

This is a collaborative work environment, so being a team player with excellent communication skills is essential. You have a proven ability to juggle and prioritize multiple stories and tasks, thriving in a fast-paced setting. You’re skilled at troubleshooting and will be tasked with regularly assigning, balancing, and adjusting workloads for team members as needed. And of course, you know how to have fun along the way!

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A University degree or equivalent.

  • Five (5) years of experience of which three must involve work in a broadcast news environment.

  • Superior leadership and coaching skills, with the demonstrated ability to mentor and encourage creativity.

  • Highly developed production skills, including strong ability to produce a variety of program formats.

  • Experience in pitching stories and translating those ideas into on-air segments.

  • Excellent writing, vetting and production skills.

  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Superior eye and ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.

  • Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television news.

  • Demonstrated news judgment under tight deadline conditions.

  • Demonstrated team leader with solid people skills who can direct, perform and delegate assignments across editorial, production and technical lines.

  • Experience using Vizrt, iNews and Media Central.

  • Familiar with Ross OverDrive Automation workflows.

  • Must be able to solve problems quickly, independently and in-group discussions.

  • Ability to perform and willingness to learn other producer roles in the newsroom.

  • Embraces change and experimentation.

  • Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of, and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures, opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new, diverse, younger audience).

  • Elevates diverse perspectives, ideas and differing points of view.

  • Ability to work in a high pressure environment and to tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods. Although this is a regular scheduled morning shift, it may require flexibility with working hours to cover operational needs.

  • Having experience in a live control room is an asset.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
