This Woman’s Work: The role of women in art history
Course Description: This course explores the presence of women in the world of art by examining the role of women as creators, as subjects, as collectors, and as patrons. Students will investigate these conceptual functions within various geographic contexts including, Italy, France, England, Spain, and the Netherlands, covering a period from ca. 1300 to the 17th century. The course will look at various media such as illuminated manuscripts, paintings, ceramics, jewellery and lace, and prints and drawings.

Class Schedule: Thursdays 3:00-5:00 pm (In Person)

Sessional dates of appointment: January 6, 2025 to April 30, 2025; Final Assessment period April 9-30, 2025.
Please note: This position includes the completion of any course work and marking not finished by April 30, 2025.

- Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term $9,930.79
- Sessional Lecturer II $10,121.77
- Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term $10,326.62
- Sessional Lecturer III $10,362.76
- Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term $10,570.02

Minimum qualifications:
- MA in Art History or a related field with specialization in women’s contributions to European art from the 14th to 17th centuries.
- Strong understanding of women’s roles as creators, subjects, collectors, and patrons in the art world.
- Proven ability to teach and engage students in critical analysis of artworks and historical contexts.
- Experience in developing course curricula and syllabi focused on women in art history.
- Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively convey complex ideas to students.
- At least two years’ experience creating and marking undergraduate assignments, exercises, and/or undergraduate essays in art history or a related field.
- Training in education would be an asset.
Preferred qualifications:
- Previous teaching experience in this or a similar course at the university level.
Description of duties: All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a University credit course, including: preparing and delivering one 2-hour lecture per week and/or leading classroom discussions during the 2 contact hours each week; developing and publishing the syllabus and marking scheme through Quercus; preparing relevant assignments for student assessment, and (if applicable) setting and invigilating term tests and final examination / assignments for student assessment; grading and reporting of final grades; maintaining office hours for academic counseling of students; answer queries by email or appointment.
