Systems Administrator

Applications are invited for a Systems Administrator to work with our IT Team on the development and support of the various IT systems deployed with the department.

The successful applicant will work around the maintenance and management of server-based systems including patching systems and software, configuring services, managing user access, and ensuring backup services are running and completing successfully. You will also be involved in designing, developing and rolling out improvements to services, major upgrades and brand-new systems and services to support the changing requirements from our academic research groups.

The department has new server resources based on Dell server systems and VMWare vSphere hypervisor along with related technologies such as VSAN (Virtual Storage Area Network) and iSCSI (Internet Small Computer Systems Interface) based storage services. The department is also actively developing a cloud-based strategy to allow use of a number of different cloud providers, and it is expected that you will help drive this adoption forward with support from the Head of IT & IG.

You will have knowledge, intellectual capacity, reasoning and analytical skills equivalent to those of a graduate. You will have experience of maintenance and management of server-based systems including patching systems and software, configuring services, managing user access and backup services. You will also have in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server technologies including Windows Active Directory, Terminal Services, WSUS, PowerShell and Group policy management. Additionally, you will have proven practical experience of virtualisation environments such as VMWare or HyperV and storage technologies suitable for supporting virtualisation platforms.

You will be based in the Radcliffe Primary Care Building, Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, Woodstock Road, Oxford. OX2 6GG as your normal place of work. There may be the opportunity for occasional remote working. You will be able to discuss a pattern of regular remote working with your line manager.

The position is permanent and offered on a full time basis, with 0.8FTE part time hours considered.
