Support Staff Full-time Net New Position

(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements) 

The Technologist provides technical support to faculty and students in the Electro-Mechanical and Automation Maintenance (EMAM), Mechanical Techniques – Industrial Millwright, and Millwright Apprenticeship programs, contributing to the overall functionality of the Mechatronics lab, EMAM shop, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)/Electrical lab. The incumbent will also provide maintenance and repair of all equipment and demonstrate the principles and theories of the area of specialty in various learning activities.

Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on-site at the Cambridge Skilled Trades campus, located at 25 Reuter Drive, Cambridge, ON.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepares and maintains equipment used in the Mechatronics lab, EMAM shop, and PLC/Electrical lab and ensures equipment is running to serve the needs of faculty and students
  • Diagnoses faults and repairs complex electrical, automation, robotic equipment, and general lab equipment
  • Demonstrates lab equipment and explains correct procedures and theoretical principles to students, faculty, and support staff
  • Works with students by demonstrating practical skills and the safe use of equipment, providing remedial instruction to students requiring further assistance in mastering required practical skills
  • Provides guidance to students toward the successful completion of their shop assignments and projects
  • Participates in the evaluation of student performance in the shop in conjunction with faculty assignment/project requirements
  • In conjunction with faculty, designs, constructs, orders, installs, modifies, and discusses the needs, types of parts, and equipment
  • Explains to student workers the requirements of student projects (assigned by faculty) and supports student completion of duties
  • Selects and/or assists faculty in the selection of capital equipment
  • Coordinates the purchase and expediting of equipment
  • Tests and evaluates equipment prior to purchase
  • Performs incoming inspections

Qualifications:

  • Two-year Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, or a related field; Certificate of Qualification as an Electrician Construction and Maintenance (309A) or Industrial Electrician (442A) is preferred
  • Five years of related industrial experience
  • Certificate of Qualification as an Industrial Mechanic Millwright (433A) is considered an asset
  • Ability to operate and repair complex robotics and automation equipment and systems
  • Ability to operate and repair electrical components in industrial machinery and equipment
  • Must be self-motivated and creative to develop and maintain the lab as a relevant, dynamic learning resource for the program
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level of organizational, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
