This is an exciting opportunity to join the Roads division of the Engineering Department an auxiliary Labourer 1.  Joining our Labourer team is a great stepping-stone to begin your municipal career! Duties of Labourers working in our Roads division include, but are not restricted to:

  • Performs a variety of unskilled manual tasks in the maintenance and construction of roads, pavements, sewers, waterworks, parks and in street cleaning and scavenging functions.
  • Sweeps and cleans streets, sidewalks, boulevards and gutters using shovel, rake or broom.
  • Digs and levels ditches, unloads pipe, mixes, wheels, places and tamps concrete, assists more skilled workmen in repairing leaks, laying pipe and installing connections and water meters.
  • Lays drain tiles, adjusts sidewalks and curbs and assists more skilled workmen in the maintenance and construction of pavements, streets and sidewalks.

The position requires a candidate to possess knowledge and skill in the methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in general construction and maintenance work; ability to understand and effectively carry out simple oral instructions. Applicants should highlight labouring, concrete, framing, forming, construction, and asphalt experience as well as any apprenticeship status held or certifications (first aid, post-secondary, etc.). This position involves continuous heavy physical work in all types of weather conditions, so sufficient physical strength, stamina and coordination are required. Driver’s Licence for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, is required (Class 3 with air brake endorsement is preferred).

Hours of work: Monday to Friday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM).
