JOB SUMMARY
This position belongs to the Streets & Operations Support (SOS) crew.
UBC Building Operations provides comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia. The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.
This position works within the Streets and Operations Support crew; a team engaged in the ongoing hard landscape maintenance (e.g. roads, sidewalks), moving services and project trades support. The Labourer performs physical work, operates specialized equipment, builds scaffolding, performs maintenance work; working within relevant safety regulations and in the safest, simplest, sustainable and most efficient manner.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The Labourer 3 reports to the Municipal Manager and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Sub-Head Labourer or Head Labourer. Responsibilities are performed independently as well as with other Labourers and or assisting trades, depending on the nature of the work.
WORK PERFORMED
Assists in hard landscape and other general labour duties using specialized equipment and physical effort.
Operates light, medium and heavy vehicles and special construction and maintenance equipment (including, but not limited to, power washers, backpack blowers, jack hammers, tampers, concrete vibrators, concrete/asphalt coring and cutting equipment, sandblasting equipment, bobcats, boom lifts, scissor lifts, pallet jacks and any other special equipment.
May monitor the work of a group of Labourers in an assigned area as designated by the Head Labourer or Sub-Head Labourer; participates in the work and ensures those under his/her jurisdiction work in a correct and safe manner.
Requests and receives tools, equipment and material for the work assigned.
Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
The Labourer 3 determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions generally result in minor delays.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
The Labourer 3 reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Sub-Head Laborer or Head Laborer. The Labourer 3 works from oral and written instructions and according to established departmental policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
The Labourer 3 monitors the work of a group of labourers in an assigned area to ensure work is being performed correctly and in a timely fashion.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
High School graduation and Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record. Secondary school education and/or completion of high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to work at heights. Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships. Or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
