Librarian

Under the direction of the College Librarian, and working collegially with other Library staff, the casual Librarian is responsible for providing reference and instructional services for students and faculty, and developing the collection in assigned subject areas. As a small academic library, all librarians are expected to be generalists and be able to provide support for other librarians in their absence.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Provides Library services to students and staff by:
Developing and conducting instructional classes for research skills and information literacy;

Providing reference services for students and faculty as needed;

Developing the collection through the selection of new material and weeding of older material in designated subject areas;

Creating and maintaining supplemental material such as citation style guides, research workbooks and subject guides;

Performs other duties as assigned

Maintains positive relationships with colleagues and other members of the College staff by:

Developing positive relationships with College faculty, staff and other professionals;

Being a positive and active participant in the Library’s responsibilities;

Providing support and cooperative assistance to fellow professionals and College staff; and

Acting with professionalism and integrity at all times.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Expertise with using major research databases

Ability to effectively work with the various information technologies used in the Library

Ability to work with and contribute to a team

Excellent understanding of current trends in library and information science

Strong services commitment

Education and Experience

A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLS or MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution

Minimum 1-year experience working as a Librarian in an academic environment

This is a short-term, casual leave replacement position commencing July 2, 2021 and ending December 22, 2021, depending on return of the incumbent. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,369.08 – $3,806.85 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
