Library Assistant

Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours bi-weekly / Days / Evenings / Weekends (Commencing Immediately)This position assists with providing frontline circulation services in person and by telephone. Duties will include but not limited to: – check in and check out of library materials (including problem solving);- shelving, shelf reading, and straightening library materials;- renewing items and placing holds in person, via phone, via email;- registering new patrons and updating patron account information;- assisting patrons with accessing and using wifi, public computers, and printers;- providing basic problem solving for technological/computer problems (public and staff);- contacting ITSS for more advanced IT/Computer problems;- implementing and explaining library policies;- receiving and preparing daily mail deliveries of library materials and newspapers;- resolving patron issues with lost or overdue items or complaints about policies;- sorting and processing of donations for Friends of the Library book sales;- accepting/processing payment for fees and book sale;- weeding of paperback collection;- processing daily holds lists;- assisting with program setup and take down;- opening and closing the library;- Work in other library locations will be require;- Other duties as required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: – Grade 12, plus some courses toward library technician certificate program or some university courses.- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered. – Excellent and current computer skills and basic software applications.- Ability to deal with patrons and staff effectively and courteously at all times.- Excellent time management skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.- Ability to lift boxes weighing 30 – 40 lbs, push book carts weighing up to 200 lbs, stand for long periods of time, and carry materials for shelving.Other Qualifications- Recent library experience would be considered an asset.- Bilingualism would be considered an asset.Preference will be given to the Unclassified Division as per the UPSE Civil Collective Agreement.Please Note: Please ensure the application clearly demonstrates how you meet the noted qualifications as applicants will be screened based on the information provided.
