We have a permanent, full-time opportunity for a Manager, Baggage Operations. Reporting to the Director, Baggage Operations and Capacity, and the successful candidate will lead the team accountable to for the successful delivery of baggage through the YVR baggage systems. This is accomplished through ownership of operational programs and service contracts related to baggage operations and must strive to deliver a seamless end to end product from induction to delivery destination, consistent performance of our operation, as well as liaising with stakeholders and regulatory partners to react and respond to changing needs and conditions. This role demands a progressive, proven leader who demonstrates transparency, accountability and integrity. You must be a self-starter who can work flexibly in a complex, fast paced and changing environment.

Key responsibilities include:
Leading a diverse team of multi-skilled employees, and providing support and direction by: monitoring work efforts and performance, hiring, coaching, motivating and supporting developmental activities, conducting formal evaluations and applying appropriate discipline

Developing, implementing, and managing programs for service delivery or baggage for our airline partners while meeting all requirements of our regulatory partners

Establishing operational principles and services to align the baggage operation with airport strategic priorities

Providing business leadership for the capital program; this includes baggage system improvement and development projects

Managing the baggage operations service contract which provides system monitoring and baggage system field response as well as additional operational functions such as manual encoding, baggage cart handling, sortation and induction support programs

Setting and monitoring operational performance and service level targets; identifying and implementing continuous improvements as necessary to ensure performance as efficiently as possible

Operational plan development and coordination for baggage asset assignment and resources to meet demand based on flight schedules and considering changing conditions and constraints within the operation

Responsible for planning and preparation for contingency operations, operational mitigations and ensuring baggage programs, documentation and procedures are up to date and trained to

Ensuring the baggage hall environment is safe, clean and equipped with the right assets and tools for the operation

Actively liaising with our airline, groundhandlers and regulatory agency partners to ensure service delivery as planned and identify opportunities for improvement; ensure they are well informed of changes in system or operations

Supporting delivery of project and planned work through planning and management of upcoming impacts to the operation by ensuring advanced plans are in place to maintain safety, minimize impact and maximize efficiency during impacts

Managing the budget for operational programs. Annual budget preparation and monthly forecasting.

Key qualifications include:
At least 10 years’ experience working within an airport or industrial operational environment with at least five years’ management-level experience, including demonstrated experience leading diverse teams, supplemented by a bachelor’s degree in a field related to Aviation, Operations Management, Business or Engineering; or an equivalent combination of training and experience (preference will be given to candidates with ITIL, Lean, or Six Sigma designation)

Strong business acumen and analytical skills with proven ability to manage, interpret and derive insight from data presented, then develop and implement operational plans and programs

Demonstrated experience in business and operational planning cycles, setting requirements and constraints, and translating that to execution plans for operational delivery/implementation

Proven high level of independent judgment and critical thinking skills

Comfort multitasking and balancing competing needs and interests

Ability to collaborate positively with peers, customers and service providers in high stress and challenging discussions enabling effective 24×7 service and remediation when required

Exceptional time management and organizational skills to prioritize within a complex portfolio

Ability to translate ambiguity into clarity for team and stakeholders

Proven experience leading and motivating a highly skilled team of professionals with the ability to nurture a work environment that is proactive, flexible and responsive to change

A strong commitment to health and safety with the ability to work safely and effectively under pressure

On call, irregular hours or shift/weekend work are at times required as the airport is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
