Job Summary

The Medical Information Technology (MedIT) unit provides technology and information support services to the medical and health education programs at Dalhousie. Reporting to the Director, MedIT, the Manager of Distributed Education Technologies oversees the day-to-day operation of the technical support staff and technology solutions that enable the delivery of Dalhousie’s Undergraduate Medicine curriculum throughout the maritime provinces, ensuring that appropriate supports are in place for faculty members to be able to provide effective instruction to all learners, regardless of geographic location.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops technology solutions, technology support models, and all required policies and procedures for ongoing technical operations to ensure the effectiveness of the delivery of Undergraduate Medical Education curriculum to all learners, regardless of geographic location, acting as top level of escalation for major technical issues.
  • Provides leadership in the promotion, development, and advancement of excellence in teaching and learning practices through technology. Guides instructors through the process of developing instructional materials to support enhanced teaching and learning.
  • Works closely with Dalhousie Medicine Nova Scotia (DMNS) and Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick (DMNB) leadership to develop communication strategies and operating procedures required for effective collaboration and information sharing between DMNS, DMNB, and MedIT staff at all sites and locations.
  • Manages 6 full time technical support staff distributed between Saint John and Halifax.
  • Determines long-term teaching technology requirements and identifies overall strategies for information and technical systems development, actively engaging with faculty members to assist in the ongoing development of pedagogical techniques, methods, and instructional materials and develops training programs and resources for faculty members.
  • Manages projects and ongoing technological improvements leveraging the DMNB capital equipment renewal fund, documenting planned operational and strategic acquisitions.

Note

Occasional travel may be required to various teaching sites throughout the Maritime provinces.

Qualifications

Undergraduate degree with five years’ related experience in educational technologies, network computing, web conferencing and collaboration technologies (or an equivalent combination of training and experience) is required. Master’s degree in distributed education, education technologies, or related field highly desirable. Supplemental studies in a media-related subject (such as video/audio production, audio visual systems design, or related technology field) would be considered essential. Training and/or demonstrable experience in network computing, enterprise level videoconferencing and audio visual infrastructure, and considerable knowledge of Microsoft Teams and the O365 environment is required. Related industry certifications are strongly preferred (e.g. Crestron, Microsoft, Pexip, AVIXA CTS). Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), interpersonal, and organizational skills are required, as is a proven ability to lead high performing teams.
