Manager, Ikaarvik

ROLE OVERVIEW

Manager, Ikaarvik: Barriers to Bridges is responsible for managing, planning, and delivery of all aspects of the Ikaarvik program. An integral member of the Ikaarvik leadership team, the Manager will function as the bridge between community-based youth and coordinators, and Ocean Wise and will work closely with the Co-Lead, Ikaarvik, and Director of Arctic Programs and collaborate with other internal and external stakeholders to develop and deliver on the Ikaarvik strategy. The Manager will collaborate with the team for strategic direction, community relations, coordination, and implementation of the program. They will provide leadership and insights to the program, represent Ikaarvik on national and multinational committees, and perform a variety of tasks including setting direction and deadlines in collaboration with Ikaarvik Leads, assigning responsibilities, and monitoring and reporting on the progress of the program.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Lead a dynamic team of Northern youth and Mentors across the North to build and sustain Ikaarvik programming by:

Coordinating and maintaining positive, mutually beneficial relationships with key partners and stakeholders, including liaising with other agencies/organizations working in similar fields as necessary, and finding collaborative opportunities where they exist;

Building and growing our relationships and reputation in the North, with provincial, territorial and federal governments, and indigenous organizations;

Advocating for the program to partners, industry, scientific researchers, media, NGO community and general public;

Monitoring, directing and performing day-to-day operations of the program to ensure that goals and objectives are met, Ikaarvik’s unique philosophy and approach are consistently followed, and that services and projects are being accomplished efficiently and effectively; taking corrective action as necessary;

In collaboration with Ikaarvik Leads, develop and execute strategic planning and processes to achieve objectives for program growth by:

Identifying and implementing opportunities to increase program funding without compromising the integrity of the program and its core components; includes reviewing and evaluating program and its delivery, making recommendations for and executing changes in operations to ensure maximum program impacts;

Developing systems and maintaining records that provide for the proper evaluation, control and documentation of assigned activities; prepares a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures and other materials.

Creating an environment conducive to individual development, productivity, and achievement while ensuring open lines of communication;

Ensures the program’s financial viability and success by fundraising and spending controls through:

Working with Ikaarvik Leads and Ocean Wise Development Team to develop compelling cases for support to recruit external partners and funders

Assisting to build and maintain strong relationships with current and potential funders, policymakers and leaders;

Assisting with oversight of departmental budget and providing regular status updates;

Implements Ikaarvik programming in northern communities by:
Working with community leaders to identify and recruit youth program participants;

Maintaining active engagement with the Arctic science community to ensure Ikaarvik is well-respected and top-of-mind as a resource for northern researchers;

Working with Community Coordinators, Mentors and Ikaarvik Leads to organize and conduct youth and community workshops bridging research and communities;

Maintaining active engagement of Ikaarvik youth through social media and project development.

Consciously desires to improve Ocean Wise and its processes by:

Leading and aiding in Emergency protocol;

Maintaining and improving organizational safety standards;

Continually improving our impact on the environment and greening of operations through support of EMS protocols;

Actively demonstrating Ocean Wise’s values and expectations for conduct;

Performs additional duties of a similar nature or level as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

2 years experience involving working with researchers, community organizations (HTO, Hamlet), Inuit organizations, Elders and/or youth in the Canadian Arctic

Experience as an Ikaarvik participant or Mentor is a plus

Post-secondary degree or certification in environmental science or technology, or work experience in an environmentally-related field a plus

This position will be ideally based in Ottawa, Ontario.

Technical Competencies

Strong oral and written communication skills in both English and Inuktut

Experience in public speaking

Basic computer skills, including email, Microsoft Word and Excel

Strong demonstrated interest in Indigenous Knowledge and science as tools for research

Strong demonstrated interest in working with and mentoring Inuit youth

Strong ability to work unsupervised and problem solve

Good knowledge of Nunavut community organizations and leadership (HTO, Hamlet, Elders’ and youth groups)

Comfortable with in- and out-of-territory travel

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Ikaarvik Manager will work primarily from their home. When COVID restrictions allow it, meetings with local organizations and groups will be required. Assistance with some research fieldwork may be required as well, including travel on sea ice and land throughout the year. Travel for workshops, conferences, training and meetings will also be needed.
