About Us

Western’s Department of Philosophy aims to provide students with a broad general education in philosophy, while also being home to many faculty members and students who work in specialized areas. We are a department where the history of philosophy is held in high regard. At the same time, we maintain strong ties with the Departments of Women’s Studies and Feminist Research, Biology, Economics, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, and Mathematics; with the Faculties of Law and Medicine; with the Brain and Mind Institute at Western and with the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo.Use this section to enter information about your Department.

This contract is for a maximum of 50 hours of course grading.

Responsibilities

The Marker will be responsible for marking and grading a variety of written work completed by students, including assignments, projects, midterms, and final exams for the course Philosophy 2996F (Introduction to Buddhist Philosophy). The incumbent will evaluate the students’ work in accordance with the marking guidelines, provide corrections and feedback, and submit grades for review based on specific guidelines from the Instructor. The incumbent may be required to submit written feedback to students based on the quality of work received, and may make time for scheduled consultations with students.

Qualifications

Eligibility Requirement:

• Must be registered in, or completed a program, within the department
• Previous marking experience preferred

Skills, Abilities & Expertise:

• In-depth knowledge of the material covered in the course/program. The successful applicant will have a good knowledge of early Buddhist Philosophy including especially the Sutras but also Abhidharma and Mahayana concepts and arguments.
• Ability to apply critical thinking to evaluate information effectively and provide appropriate recommendations or feedback
• Attention to detail and proofreading abilities with an excellent command of the English language
• Communication skills to convey information and feedback in a clear and effective manner
• Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to work in a manner that models best practices in confidentiality standards
• Ability to employ a systematic and efficient approach to work
• Ability to provide feedback in a way that is positively received
• Personable and courteous in working relationships with colleagues, students and the public
• Ability to prioritize and organize a fluctuating work load
• Demonstrated ability to understand and resolve issues
