This role is responsible for delivering engaging and effective interpretive programs for both the public and school groups at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum and occasionally off-site. These programs will highlight UBC biodiversity research and issues of biodiversity conservation.
This is a temporary part-time position. The incumbent must be able to commit to a work schedule that includes weekends regularly; must be available to work holidays, occasional evenings and on an on-call basis.
Organizational Status
This role reports to the Education & Outreach Coordinator. Works with staff, students, volunteers and the public. Works with general visitors and school teachers when interpreting and delivering programs at the Museum and partner venues.
Work Performed
- Delivers a variety of engaging and interactive interpretive programs and activities, developed and scripted by the Education & Outreach Coordinator and/or subject-matter experts, which emphasize biodiversity and conservation. Programs may include formal and informal public programs and tours as well as school programs for primary and secondary school groups.
- Provides exceptional customer service when interacting with visitors and answering general inquires.
- Assists with special events and promotions; e.g. Spring Break, exhibit openings, Halloween, etc.
- Works with the interpretation and education team to implement new programs and activities; area of focus will vary with need/opportunity and experience/expertise.
- Assists with recruitment and training of volunteers and work experience students, as needed.
- Maintains a working knowledge of museum collections and biodiversity information, issues, and research.
- Assists with museum operations (opening and closing procedures, inventory, cleaning).
- Performs additional duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position is the public face of the Museum. It requires significant knowledge of natural history and interpretive skills. Poor performance will jeopardize the Museum s standing in the community and decrease visitation.
Supervision Received
Reports to and works under the general direction of the Education & Outreach Coordinator. Must be able to make some independent decisions and act accordingly when dealing with issues that may arise. While on the floor, the Interpreter will act according to Museum policies and guidelines.

Preferred Qualifications
High School graduation.Minimum 2 years of biology, natural sciences, education, environmental education or related field of studies, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Several seasons of interpretive or teaching experience working with the public and children.
Teaching certificate preferred.
Experience supervising volunteers an asset. Outstanding presentation and public speaking skills.Able to communicate effectively with audiences of all ages and learning abilities.Strong organization skills and able to work independently and as an effective member of the team.Excellent customer service, interpersonal and relationship building skills.Able to learn and adapt in a changing environment.
Computer skills preferred – experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.Must be able to commit to a work schedule that includes weekends regularly. Must be available to work holidays and occasional evenings.
