Description
The Caretaker/Custodian is responsible for performing janitorial duties which ensure The Salvation Army Temiskaming Community Church is maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner in compliance with applicable standards
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit, including the Thrift Store
- Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e., empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
- Ensure kitchen cleanliness at all times
- Clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors and fixtures
- Clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors, restock washrooms and hand sanitizers, and distribute received material as required
- Wipe down all tables, chairs and door handles
- Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required
- Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security
- Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required
- Perform minor repairs such as electrical (change light bulbs) and plumbing (unblocking toilets, troubleshooting flushing issues). Reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor
- Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required
- Ensure the Corps building is set up and ready for all rental groups
- Maintain the security of property at all times
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up-keep of storage shed
- Lawn care including mowing lawns, weeding garden beds, etc.
- Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling
Perform other position related duties as required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent part time position
- Schedule may vary from week to week and include both weekdays and weekends
- Flexibility in scheduling is required
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically in the entire facility and property designated
- The incumbent is required to lift/move up to 30 pounds
- The performance of the job requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- The successful job applicant will have completed High School
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- A minimum of three (3) months prior related experience, including general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures
- Must have valid WHMIS
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
- Read and follow the Employee Handbook
- As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management
- Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance
- Participate in yearly formal evaluation
- Represent The Salvation Army Temiskaming Community Church in a professional manner at all times
- Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible
- Participate in staff development as required
- Work as an effective member of the Temiskaming Community Church team
- Work within agency fire safety, health & safety and emergency procedures
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check
HOURS: 12 hours per week
