Description
The Thrift Store Clerk provides exceptional customer service to all that come into the store and represents The Salvation Army. The TS clerk also receives donations from the public, sorts all donations, prices the items and stocks the store shelves. The role also rotates to take shifts on the cash register, keeping the store tidy and prepares the store for sales by hanging poster and changing the window displays.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet customers and donors in a friendly, genuine and professional manner ensuring customers have a positive shopping experience
- Provides exceptional customer service that is genuine, accurate, quick and efficient service to all customers and donors
- Effectively operate the cash register and debit machine while ensuring transactions are accurate and all merchandise is rung in correctly
- Ensure security of the Thrift Store at all times
- Treats co-workers, customers, donors, and volunteers with respect and dignity
- Sort, price, according to quality and value using store guidelines, and display merchandise ensuring the store is well stocked and neatly displayed at all times
- Assist on the sales floor
- Responsible for the security and safe handling of cash
- Assist in the counting and recording of daily sales at end of day
- Inform the Manager of any customer concerns
- Maintains the interior and exterior of the building in a safe manner ensuring Health & Safety procedures. Bring to the attention of the Manager any concerns
- Works in accordance to all TSA Health & Safety and Provincial standards and policies, completing annual safety training
- Conducts snow removal requirements including but not limited to shoveling snow and applying salt
- Answers telephone in a professional manner
- Maintain a neat and tidy work area
- Ensure daily cleaning of store is completed (vacuum, sweep, scrub, dust, clean windows and washrooms
- Decorate store for special occasions when requested
- Participate in seasonal & special events – i.e. bake sale etc.
- Prepare items for recycling/refuse; effectively & efficiently handle, store, cull and load recycle/refuse as needed both in store and on truck & dumpster
- Greet all donors in a friendly manner; help donors unload their donations according to store guidelines, ensuring donations are handled with care and stored properly; be courteous and thankful for all donations
- Meet daily production targets
- Attend and participate in all staff meetings and trainings
- Inform management or supervisor of any concerns
- Assist in volunteer training
- Follow all The Salvation Army & Thrift Stores policies and procedures and The Health & Safety Act & Regulations.
- Complete all other store related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Minimum Grade 12 education NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience working in a retail environment
- Previous experience working with cash
- Previous experience working with volunteers considered an asset
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Must be able to lift more than 25 pounds
- Ability to work as a team member with other staff, volunteers, donors and clients
- Ability to work with irate customers and provide exceptional customer service
- Support for and an understanding of mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada
- Must possess a desire to serve others and exceed customer service standards
- Good communication skills in English
- Excellent organizational skills
- Able to work in a fast pace environment
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Possess excellent problem-solving skills
- A self-starter
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear criminal record check
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS: 21 hours per week. Scheduled for shifts Monday – Saturday
