Placement Coordinator & Classroom Aide – Adult Special Education (JET and TARGET Programs)

Under the direction of the Instructor:

  • PRACTICUM PLACEMENTS:
  • Determine accommodations and supports needed to help students during work experience and on the job
  • Survey the community for possible practicum sites
  • Develop professional resumes and cover letters for each student
  • Contact prospective employers
  • Analyse the practicum site by collecting expert information from the owner or manager of the business and/or collecting information from direct observation at the prospective practicum site
  • Set up practicum sites and place students in site
  • Supervise, provide training support, collect progress data, and observe the student within the community
  • Liaise with the employer and the co-workers
  • Provide follow up support to the student
  • Provide individual tutoring to students in order to support skill development in the practicum
  • CLASSROOM
  • (with instructor) Conduct intake interviews with students seeking program admittance
  • Update and maintain confidential student records
  • Refer and support students in accessing CNC services and/or community agencies as appropriate
  • Conduct Essential Skills Assessments to determine students’ ES levels and decide appropriate starting points for learning
  • Assist students with online learning activities and provide individual support when required
  • Prepare materials and resources; prepare program plans to meet student needs; and provide support in the classroom.
  • Under direction of the Instructor, provide individual tutoring and instruction of particular segments of the course; review previously taught information with students.
  • Supervise students in College setting if needed.
  • Collect progress data on students.
  • Develop individualized student evaluations for employers/co-workers.
  • Assist in the development of business plans for students.
  • Work with employers and students to develop part time employment or volunteer positions.
  • Liaise with other college departments as necessary to support student success
  • PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
  • Provide accessibility information to prospective students and community organizations
  • Make recommendations to the instructor on new ways to improve service to students
  • Remain current with new technologies and accommodations to support students
  • Conduct information sessions with the instructor at schools with prospective students, to increase awareness of the JET/TARGET program
  • Assist the instructor/program with input on areas for program/curriculum development
  • Attend conferences and research resources to ensure program remains contemporary to provincial requirements and community needs
  • Collaborate with provincial and community resources as required
  • OTHER

  • Promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Completion of a two-year diploma post-secondary program which focuses on the development of skills and attitudes for working with people with developmental disabilities, mental health issues or significant barriers to employment
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with people with developmental disabilities, mental health issues, or significant barriers to employment, in a Job Development/Job Placement capacity
  • Completion of a two-year diploma post-secondary program which focuses on the development of skills and attitudes for working with people with developmental disabilities, mental health issues or significant barriers to employment
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience working with people with developmental disabilities, mental health issues, or significant barriers to employment, in a Job Development/Job Placement capacity
  • Completion of course or workshop on Job Placement of people with disabilities
  • Experience working with students with cognitive and mobility/agility impairments
  • Ability to work with students with developmental/deficit disorders
  • Knowledge and understanding of a wide variety of disabilities
  • Knowledge of accessibility issues, statutory obligations, privacy guidelines,
  • knowledge of accommodations and adaptations, as well as specialty software/hardware and accessibility related resources (e.g. Kurzweill, DragonSpeak)
  • Ability to identify and address personal professional development needs to stay current in the field
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, organizational skills, interpersonal skills and ability to multi-task
  • Ability to work independently, change and adapt to dynamic situations, and respond quickly to emergencies; ability to identify crisis situations and respond appropriately
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress demanding environment,
