The Social Medicine and Population Health Program at University Health Network (UHN) seeks to address health inequities, exacerbated by the pandemic in underserved communities. Applying a social determinants of health approach, the Social Medicine Program connects high health and high social needs individuals with Community Health Workers and Peer Workers and collaborates with community partners on the development of new care models to address unmet health and social needs including housing, food security and income.
The Social Medicine Program is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to promote community-based research with underserved populations by fostering community partnerships with organizations serving these populations. Working with the Executive Director and team, the Research Fellow will build robust relationships with community partners and work to identify community needs and research opportunities.
Duties include:
- Working with the Social Medicine Program team and the University of Toronto’s Population Health Analytics Lab to design and develop community-based research programs
- Collaborating with community partners and multidisciplinary health care teams to engage program participants
- Planning, implementing, and coordinating all aspects of data collection and source documentation as per hospital policy and industry guidelines.
- Executing study-related administrative tasks (e.g. ethics submissions, etc.); acting as central point of communication for study management
- Interpreting, synthesizing, and analyzing data using scientific or statistical techniques
- Selecting and applying standard calculations and formulas independently to compile data or process documents; often serve as a resource for research methods and numerical analyses
- Co-authoring sections of research publications and reports as needed
- Completing project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed
Qualifications:
- PhD received within 5 years (or MD received within 10 years) with experience/knowledge in community based participatory research preferably with marginalized populations
- Experience in public health and community based participatory research
- Experience working with community partners and building and managing research partnerships
- Experience working with persons from marginalized communities
- Experience contributing to research publications
- Ability to proactively, clearly, and effectively communicate information to internal and external partner organizations and granting agencies, both orally and in writing
- Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects while also directing the work of others
- Excellent organizational and planning skills
- Minimum of five years of progressive experience in a research administration or related experience
- Prior experience within a university or large, multidisciplinary institution working with researchers preferred
- Familiarity with research grant applications with experience in grant proposal and report
writing (especially matching funds/government research infrastructure programs) in a university or hospital-based research environment preferred
- Experience with, or a strong appreciation for, the particulars of government research funding and programs, as well as a demonstrated understanding of frameworks related to population health, social medicine, equity, diversity, and inclusion preferred
- Strong verbal, written, interpersonal, facilitation, and mediation skills; experience working with a diverse group of stakeholders; the ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, and diplomacy; the ability to manage multiple, competing, and frequently changing priorities; and a broad vision for the role of diversity in enhancing institutional excellence
