invites applications for the position of Family School Enhancement Counsellor – Indigenous Education Services

The successful applicant will:
Provide supportive counselling to Indigenous families, children and youth experiencing social, emotional and other challenges

Help provide education around, and facilitate access to, community services and supports based on evaluation of individual/family needs

Work as part of a collaborative school team alongside school counsellors, administration and teaching staff

Advocate for indigenous students and families while being a liaison between home, school, and community to increase positive communication and consistency

Provide home visits and in-home support as necessary to assist parents in the development of structured routines, appropriate boundaries and effective behaviour management strategies

Assist school counsellors in organizing school-wide presentations and universal lessons to promote emotional, physical, and social well-being and awareness of trauma informed restorative schools

The successful applicant must:
Have university graduation in a field related to the position (social work, psychology etc), supplemented by experience working with First Nations, Metis and Inuit people and communities.

Possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills

Be able to respond to crisis situations appropriately and effectively

Have knowledge and understanding of the reciprocal influences of home, school, and community and the impact of these influences on a child’s functioning

A strong understanding of trauma informed restorative practices

Have extensive knowledge of community resources and how to facilitate access

Be a team player as well as an efficient and organized independent worker

The following are considered assets for the position:
Experience in Indigenous knowledge mobilization and dissemination principles and best practices

Experience working with community agencies and/or within a school setting would be an asset.

Knowledge of Indigenous Social Work

Knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action

Knowledge of Indigenous heritage, language and understanding of the social structure and cultural norms that influence the successful transition of an Indigenous student into the post-secondary environment

Preference will be given to individuals identify as First Nations, Metis or Inuit
