About Our Opportunity

The Education and Development Officer, under the direction of the Director, Race Relations Equity and Inclusion, aims to carry out the strategic directions of the Race Relations, Equity and Inclusion unit in the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development programming and initiatives. The Education and Development Officer aims to strengthen the Commission’s capacity in the province to educate the public and deliver targeted learning and development programming for the public, private, and community sectors in the areas of human rights, systemic discrimination, anti-racism, sexual harassment, accessibility, equity and inclusion. The Education and Development Officer will work with colleagues and partners to develop, deliver and evaluate learning and development programming and initiatives The Education and Development Officer will also assist the Director with development of policy and program initiatives aimed at addressing racism and systemic discrimination.

Primary Accountabilities

Within this role, you will focus on:
In Consultation with the Director and colleagues, design and deliver innovative learning and development and anti-racism programming for Commission staff, clients, partners, and the general public on, human rights, systemic discrimination, anti-racism, sexual harassment, accessibility, equity, and inclusion.

Evaluate and update learning and development content and delivery methods to ensure content and approaches are, accessible, responsive, audience specific, culturally appropriate and effective. Develop criteria for effectiveness of learning and development programming, implement and analyse evaluation tools. Arrange translation and culturally appropriate adaptation of training materials. Reports regularly to the Director on outcomes.

Conduct research on current trends in the area of adult education, facilitation skills and group dynamics, and keep up-to-date on current human rights issues to ensure programming and initiatives reflect current issues around discrimination.

Play a coordinating role in various events such as International Human Rights Day.

Collaborate and partner with government, private sector, academic institutions and community organizations where appropriate to advance shared goals and initiatives related to the Commission’s mandate and participate in such committees as Partners for Human Rights.

In consultation with the Director, supports the Commission to disseminate information related to the Commission, its mandate, and work throughout government and to the general public as required.

Assist the Director with development and delivery of policy and program initiatives aimed at addressing racism and systemic discrimination including exploring external funding options.

Support development and delivery of learning and development plans for Commission staff.

Assist in the supervision of students, volunteers, and staff as assigned by the Director.

Qualifications and Experience

As the successful candidate, you will have a bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Your experience must clearly demonstrate your skills in knowledge transfer, community building, project management, group facilitation and public communication. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in human rights, anti-racism, accessibility, systemic discrimination, sexual harassment, equity, diversity, and inclusion are required.

To excel within this role, you must be innovative, motivated, collaborative and organized as well as a team player with exceptional project management, group facilitation and critical thinking skills. You use research, consultation, data and best practice to identify innovative approaches to overcoming challenges. You have a proven track record of working both independently and collaboratively with a team as well as working in and with equity-seeking communities.

In addition to the above, the following skills are essential: design and delivery of learning and development programs, research and writing, and event planning.

A graduate degree in a related field or certificate in Adult Education would be considered an asset.
