The Program Assistant at The Salvation Army Mountberry Adult Day Service is accountable to the Business Services Manager to provide excellent personal care to residents. Primary functions include providing care according to the established client care plan including all components of activities of daily living and supporting participation in recreational and therapeutic activities.
The Program Assistant is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with the Salvation Army’s core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and services provided to the residents.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountabilities:
- Is responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of personal care delivered.
- Contributes to positive customer service with clients and families daily
- Facilitates communication in complex care issues to foster positive client outcomes
- Establishes and sustains care in a manner that is client centred and fosters evidence-based best practice
- Observes, reports, records client conditions, and follows care plans.
- Provides thorough peri care when assisting clients with toileting.
- Supports in the dining room and feeds as necessary considering clients’ preferences and diet restrictions
- Assist with the preparation of the program’s physical environment and maintenance of the activity area.
Working Conditions:
- This is a contract position based on 30 hours per week.
- Normal hours of work: 9:30am-3:30pm. Monday to Friday which includes a ½ hour paid meal break.
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule
- Some flexibility in scheduling required, some weekend and evening work may be required
- Working environment is generally in agreeable conditions including Office, Dining room, Washroom and Recreational program settings
- Work locations may be divided between two sites: 300 Winterberry Drive, Stoney Creek, Ontario or 187 Stonechurch Road, Ancaster, Ontario. Primary Site will be Ancaster

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Completion of Secondary School Diploma is required.
- Completion of Personal Support Worker or Social Services Diploma. Currently a member in good standing with the Ontario PSW or SSW Registry.
- Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training.
- Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
- Current Safe Food Handling Certification.
- Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
- U-First Training would be an asset
- Alternative combinations of education may be considered
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.
- Proficiency in all Microsoft Office suite of products
- Previous experience conducting craft, music, art, fitness, etc., skills

- Demonstrate leadership skills and strong oral and written communication skills.

- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and exercise good judgment
- Self-motivated and disciplined
- Communicate in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
- A good listener with a genuine concern for the client/participant. Be able to offer sound advice that can meet the client/participant’s expectations.
- Participate in mandatory orientation training, departmental staff meetings, on-going professional development, and training.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
- Ensure all certifications are maintained as required.
- Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution
- Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle/insurance, and a current original copy of driver’s abstract, which is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion is required.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
