Research Associate, North America Program
Term: May 15, 2021 – April 30, 2022 (Full-time contract with possibility for renewal)
Location: Our head office is in Montreal but this is a remote working position open to all applicants in Canada
About the role
The Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) is a non-profit organization whose main objective is to increase Canadians’ knowledge of their country via conferences, publications, learning materials and research. Our international and interdisciplinary research team is conducting a three-country study, COVID-19’s differential impact on Indigenous Peoples and Newcomers: A socioeconomic analysis of Canada, the USA and Mexico. The study seeks to understand the socioeconomic impact of COVID-19 among Indigenous peoples, newcomers, and racialized groups in Canada, the USA and Mexico. As an extension of this study, to better coordinate and consolidate research and public knowledge around the social policy impacts of the COVID-19 variants, the research team will convene an international network of academic, community, Indigenous governance, ethnocultural associations, and government partners.
The Research Associate, North America Program will assist the Research Director in conducting primary and secondary research, including statistical data analysis, on a variety of topics related to primary survey data on the social and economic impacts of COVID-19, particularly as it relates to vulnerable populations in Canada, the United States and Mexico, as well as secondary data analysis using population-level datasets from Statistics Canada (e.g., the Census, Labour Force Survey, General Social Survey, Canadian Community Health Survey) and other national surveys related to migration, integration and inclusion.
The Research Associate will also be responsible for conducting evidence synthesis with the research completed by members of the network on the social policy impacts of the COVID-19 variants. They will be responsible for translating the evidence and data collected into easy-to-digest research reports, policy briefs, factsheets, and presenting survey/study findings to multiple audiences and stakeholders, including policymakers, service provider organizations, researchers and academics.
Minimum Qualification and Requirements:
Qualified candidates for the position will be comfortable performing statistical analysis using SPSS (or related tools such as STATA, R, or SAS). The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator, have strong technical writing skills, be able to work independently while managing multiple tasks. They will be someone who is adaptable, innovative and has good problem-solving skills.
- Graduate degree or equivalent in the social sciences field
- Minimum one year of applied research experience
- Experience preparing knowledge dissemination products including research reports, policy briefs, factsheets, and presentations
- Technical expertise with SPSS and/or related statistical analysis software
- Knowledge/application of multiple regression and correlation analysis, crosstabs are beneficial
- Familiarity with data visualization software (e.g., Tableau) is beneficial
- Bilingual (English-French) preferred
