UNIT PROFILE

The Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH) provides comprehensive outpatient care and is the regional respiratory service for the City of Hamilton and the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant communities. FIRH has a unique Chest Programme that comprises respiratory medicine and thoracic surgery services; all are located on one site. The Institute is supported by state-of-the-art pulmonary function and sleep laboratories, an induced sputum analysis laboratory, an aerosol laboratory, and access to the regional laboratory department.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse (RN) for Firestone functions as a member of a multidisciplinary health care team, with additional academic and clinical preparation who functions in a specialty role in respiratory and thoracic nursing. The RN improves the quality of care for patients with respiratory illness (with a focus on COPD and Asthma) within the Firestone programs. The RN will primarily provide clinical care for patients in the respirology outpatient clinics while providing cross coverage for all clinical areas within the Firestone Ambulatory Clinic (including procedures, nursing treatment room patient care (phlebotomy, IV therapy), Adverse and Allergy, and other programs assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • BScN Degree in Nursing required
  • Minimum 3 years experience as a RN in respiratory nursing is required
  • Recent knowledge of respiratory health and illness, with particular focus Respirology-COPD and Asthma is required
  • Experience in assessment and monitoring of patients with active and latent TB preferred
  • An enthusiasm for quality improvement in healthcare
  • Ability to develop, implement, and sustain community partnerships
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to meet multiple deadlines
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Patient education skills with family and patients
  • Strong working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to function as an effective member of a collaborative interdisciplinary team
  • Must have good attendance and work record
  • Experience with performing and interpreting skin tests via prick and intradermal techniques required
  • Experience with insect desensitization required
  • Smoking Cessation Training preferred
  • Certified Asthma Educator and Certified COPD Educator highly preferred
