Executive Council includes the Office of the Premier of Alberta, Deputy Minister’s and Associate Deputy Minister’s Offices, Cabinet Coordination Office, Policy Coordination Office, Operations and Machinery of Government, Protocol Office, Intergovernmental Relations, and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
The Policy Coordination Office is responsible for supporting the decision making process at the Government of Alberta. This includes working with Ministries on policy, legislative and regulatory proposals, providing secretariat support to Cabinet Policy and Legislative Review Committees and working with Cabinet to identify priorities.

Role
In this dynamic, fast paced and complex environment, you will support several distinct but related areas that help ensure the continued development of effective regulations and policy.
Reporting to the Director, Legislative Review, this position provides research, analysis and recommendations to support the development and implementation of policy through legislative and regulatory changes. You will assist with reviewing proposed regulations and legislation to ensure effectiveness and relevancy. Additionally, you will work collaboratively within interdisciplinary teams to support the objectives of the Policy Coordination Office by:
- Providing advice and consultative support to clients;
- Identifying policy implications with regulations and legislation;
- Researching and analyzing policy initiatives brought forward by departments and providing advice to Senior Policy Managers, Policy Managers and ADMs in PCO;
- Supporting the progress of regulations and related policy through the cabinet committee approval process, with a specific focus on supporting the Legislative Review Committee; and
- Other related projects and activities in a lead or support capacity, as determined by the Director.
Success in this position will require a high degree of understanding of the relationship between policy and statute, and the impact of government decision making on stakeholders and the public. Knowledge of legislative, regulatory and policy development in Alberta is essential, as is an understanding of the decision-making process and the nature and role of government agencies. The role also requires an ability to build professional working relationships with key contacts in government departments, and an ability to see the big picture while exercising high attention to detail. This requires a strong ability to think strategically and critically on a broad scale to help fulfill corporate objectives, including by analyzing and communicating the ties between complex technical issues and broader policy goals.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to clearly convey complex ideas in understandable terms to a variety of audiences is crucial, as is the ability to multi-task with sometimes limited direction and to adapt and respond quickly to changing priorities.
Qualifications
University graduation preferably in social sciences, economics, public administration, business/commerce, communications or a related area plus 4 years of progressively responsible related experience in a public sector or a complex business environment; or equivalent as described below:
- Experience reviewing policy, legislation, and regulations.
- Experience with research, policy/regulatory analysis, and project management.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience supporting decision-making bodies such as boards or committees would be an asset.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education

Salary
$2,707.94 – $3,549.74 bi-weekly ($70,677 – $92,648 annually)

This position is exempt from the Bargaining Unit.
