Description
The Shelter Worker provides a safe and secure environment for clients, residents and visitors.
HOURS:
- Permanent 32 Hours
- Shift work midnight to 8am
- Flexibility in hours is expected: work includes weekends and holidays
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ability to work within the mission, vision & values of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
- Use a client-centered approach by consistently demonstrating compassion, respect and empathy
- Supports, where and when possible, the efforts of all clients and co-workers
- Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients
- Maintains availability for personal, practical and moral support
- Monitors the activities of clients and accurately records day-to-day happenings
- Performs internal and external security checks
- Provides safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
- Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed
- Coordinates client care relating to security issues and ensures ongoing enforcement of policies
- Involved in serving meals/snacks
- Performs other assigned duties as required to ensure a safe and secure environment

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- CPR, First Aid, Naloxone and Non-Violent Crisis Training
Experience:
- Strong service ethic and a friendly disposition with the public
- Team oriented and able to take initiative
- Ability to work with minimum supervision in a fast-paced environment and cope with stressful situations
- High standards of integrity, judgment and confidentiality
- Knowledge and interest in the programs and services of The Salvation Army and Ridge Meadows Ministries
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Effective communication skills
- Adaptability to change and frequent interruptions
- Willingness to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Strong decision making skills
- Effective skills in conflict resolution and non-violent intervention
- Computer and word processing ability
- Successful obtainment of clearance through the Criminal Records Review Program
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Preference to those who have completed High School plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months
- Related experience in social services field
- Current valid BC driver’s license and clean driving record an asset
