Description
The Senior Financial Accountant (SFA) leads an accounting group and reports to the Assistant Director of Financial Accounting. Utilizing hands-on accounting experience and an in-depth understanding of accounting principles and organizational practices, the SFA will perform complex accounting activities and process development. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, accountability for account reconciliation, financial reporting, budget preparation, and provision of financial management advice to various stakeholders.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This role has three primary areas of responsibility which are: 1) Ensuring GL maintenance and validity, and related financial & analytical functions; 2) Providing oversight and maintenance for preparation of financial documents and reporting tools; and 3) Managing partnerships with units and external clients. Specific job duties include:
- Manages monthly closing of financial records and posting of month end information to ensure accuracy of financial statements
- Reviews unit financial statements for accuracy, and financial health (i.e. Cash flow, fund balances, budgetary performance, etc.)
- Develops new processes and systems to promote efficiencies and improve internal controls
- Advises and mentors accountants and partners regarding policies, tax law and accounting principles
- Prepares or approves monthly journal entries
- Performs account reconciliations and reconciles discrepancies
- Prepares annual audit schedule and financial statements in accordance with requirements of funding agreements
- Ensures government filings are prepared in accordance with all applicable policies and guidelines
- Reviews budget variance analysis reports with clients and recommends/implements corrective actions where required
- Member of budget team, prepares first draft budgets, and collaborates on final budget submissions
- Designated client contact – develops strong partnerships, ensures excellent customer service and timely communication, and delivers resolutions to identified issues
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum 3 years experience in full-cycle accounting (AP/AR/GL)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Finance/Accounting
- Enrolled in CPA Professional Education Program (PEP
PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:
- Superior attention to detail
- Well developed problem-solving and analytical skills
- High level of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
- Advanced MS Excel skills for handling large volumes of data (ie. VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, index/match, etc.) and strong general computing and MS Office skills
