        Responsibilities
        
                        Position Purpose Summary:
Boundless Vancouver Community Ministries organizes The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver Christmas Toy Shop for children and families. The Christmas Volunteer & Donation Coordinator works with our Boundless Vancouver team to organize our volunteers and coordinate donations for The Christmas Toy Shop and the Christmas Luncheon.
BASIC FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteer Coordination: 

Works in conjunction with and in support of The Christmas Toy Shop by identifying and promoting volunteer opportunities
Recruit, screen, register & orient appropriate volunteers to fill positions
Process necessary paperwork, including Criminal Record Checks and volunteer agreement packages
Deploy volunteers to positions relevant to their interests and skills
Help orientate and supervise volunteers while they are deployed to their positions
Keep thorough records of volunteer information and hours of service for statistical purposes

Donation Coordination: 

Work in conjunction with and in support of the Christmas campaigns, identifying the financial and in-kind donation needs for Christmas distribution
Solicit financial and in-kind donations and correspond in a timely manner with individuals and corporate donors in the community; organize toy drives with companies and organizations in the community
Coordinate drop-off and pick up schedule with donors and driver(s)
Help coordinate with divisional Public Relations team for the Toy Mountain event
Relay donated items to the appropriate personnel for proper storage and distribution
Keep thorough records of donor information and donated items/amounts & maintain a positive relationship with our donors
Perform other duties as assigned

 
                    
                

        Qualifications
        
                        Education/Certifications:

Post-secondary education and work experience in fund-raising, donor relations, public relations

Experience:

One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience, including experience working in customer service related fields

Required Skills/Knowledge:

Excellent organizational skills
Superior relationship building skills and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels in a confident, collaborative and professional manner
Proven ability to multitask
Be able to work independently; demonstrated self-starter and team player
Excellent verbal communication skills in person and on the phone
Excellent written communication skills
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Google Suite and Microsoft Office
Ability to learn new software quickly and teach others
Be able to lift up to 30 lbs

 
PREFERRED SKILLS/capabilities: 

Valid BC Driver’s License
Background check consent
A clear vulnerable sector screening
A clean drivers’ abstract
Completion of online Armatus Abuse Prevention Training and required Health and Safety training

This staff writer is a summer intern position in conjunction with the Canada Summer Jobs program.  The writer will work with the Editorial Department team to create content for territorial publications, Salvationist.ca website and social media. Articles could include program profiles, testimonials, and short news items. A diversity study for the territorial publications is also a required project.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • It is expected that the Summer Student would work in conjunction with the Associate Editor of Salvationist to complete 4-5 writing assignments per month, including:
    • Salvationist articles as assigned (media reviews, territorial news, features, etc.)
    • a Faith & Friends article or two (testimonial)
    • short contributions to Salvationist.ca website
    • additional assignments as time permits
    • Although written prior to the termination of the contract in August, these articles may be published over the course of the calendar year. Writing assignments include securing print-worthy photos from various sources
  • Contributes to editorial content for the printed and online editions of Salvationist and Faith & Friends magazines.
  • Writes clear compelling copy on a variety of Salvation Army themes, such as ministry unit profiles, interviews, event coverage and service articles.
  • Liaises with headquarters and ministry units regarding editorial content for news and articles as appropriate.
  • Works with photographers and graphic designers to secure appropriate artwork for articles.
  • Works with copy editor to ensure factual accuracy of stories and appropriateness for audience.
  • Conducts a diversity study of publications to ensure balance of gender, ethnicities, geographical regions, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

The successful candidate must meet the following requirements under the Canada Summer Jobs Program:

  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • Canadian citizen, permanent resident or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred
  • Is legally entitled to work according to the provincial / territorial legislations and regulations

Education and Experience

  • University/college courses in journalism, communications, English or equivalent
  • Published writing experience preferred

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

  • Strong writing ability (e.g. undergraduate level)
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Understanding and support of the mission of The Salvation Army’s mission, values and culture
