Description
There are 1 contract full-time position offering hours 40 hours per week for 7 weeks. Schedule will vary according to requirements and responsibilities. Shifts include a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable. Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. Shifts can include the following: days, afternoons, and weekends.
Conditions of Employment:
- Required to provide written confirmation of enrolment for the next academic year in a post-secondary program.
- This is a temporary full time position based on 40 hours per week.
- Scheduled location: Caledonia Thrift Store
Hours of work – To be determined in consultation with the supervisor as per the operational requirements
Normal location of work is the Caledonia Thrift Store, 322 Argyle Street South, Unit #8, Caledonia, ON however can also include the following:
- 533 Main Street East and other various community sites based on training requirements
This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- a post-secondary student, between 18 and 30 years of age at the start of the program
- have been registered as full-time student in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
- be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
- be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in promoting an environment that is both supportive and nurturing to clients/program participants
- Assist the Day Program Counsellor/Residential Counsellor with supporting the client/participant during their duties at the Thrift Store i.e. processing donations, sorting, pricing etc.
- Assist the Day Program Counsellor/Residential Counsellor in supporting the efforts made to meet clients/participants spiritual needs by way of a demonstrated interest and participation in programming activities where necessary, for example.
- Process donations received, unloading, lifting, sorting and pricing items as per store policy.
- Replenish inventory levels based on the direction of the store manager.
- May be responsible for opening and closing of the store while on shift and associated shift duties.
- Effective and efficient management and the accurate completion of all customer transactions including the handling of cash, VISA, debit, etc.; the proper and accurate recording of all daily sales.
- May implement store layout plans and window displays that are tasteful and attractive to customers.
- Ensure the general upkeep, cleanliness and maintenance of the store, storage area, washrooms, staff lunchroom and main office areas
- Promote a friendly and courteous environment and service to customers.
- Contribute to meeting store sales budgets by maintaining customer standards.
- Contribute to the safety of all staff and customers by clearing of fire exits and ensuring that there are no obstacles left inside or outside the store.
- Assist clients/participants with disabilities to learn and accurately carry out Thrift Store Clerk job duties.
- Assist in providing one-on-one training tailored to the needs of the client/participant.
- Have a clear understanding of the Thrift Store Clerk job duties, may involve assisting in the development of a specific plan as to how they can best train the client/participant to work more independently until completely self-sufficient and able to perform job duties accurately and effectively without assistance.
- Perform other position related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed a minimum of one (1) year of post-secondary education in the Human Services Field or equivalent
- A minimum of (3) three months of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities and vulnerable populations and cashier/retail experience.
- Experience working with individuals with special needs is an asset.
- Be a good listener, have a genuine concern for the client/participant and be able to offer sound advice that can meet the client/participant’s expectations.
- Life experience is needed to teach and inspire by example
- Computer experience including MS Office.
- Current First Aid & Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation with Defibrillation training is required. (must be verified with copy of certificate).
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Ability to physically stand and/or walk for long periods of time as well as the ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 15 kg.
- Provide an original copy of a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
