During the summer, families are stressed to find supervision and meaningful activities for their children. We support families and nurture their children in holistic programming to know the love of God.
The Summer Youth Program Leader is responsible for leading summer programs for children ages 7-12 years old. The Summer Youth Program Leader is required to perform their duties in a manner consistent with The Salvation Army Boundless Vancouver’s core values and to ensure neighbors’ safety and well-being.
The job requires leadership skills, patience, and a high level of enthusiasm to work with children from a variety of backgrounds.
The candidate is highly organized, an effective leader, and a go-getter with the ability to work with minimum supervision. The candidate is creative, full of energy, and willing to provide children with an engaging summer camp experience.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Temporary, On Call – Up to 35 hours/week
- June 28th, 2021 to September 3rd, 2021
- The start date is flexible
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plan, coordinate or lead skills workshops to camp participants (i.e. programming – drama, sports, cross-cultural understanding, spiritual practices, volunteering/community service.)
- If applicable, work alongside food security programs, through interaction with families in need, for registration referrals.
- If applicable, work with team to lead children and youth to respond to the gospel through presentation and prayer.
- Develop relationships with children, using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and well-developed children and youth, living in peace with themselves and others.
- Working with chaplains, provide emotional care and spiritual care to enrich their lives and allow them to reach their full potential and the welfare of the city.
- Participate in staff training and development.
- Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information.
- Perform other relevant duties as assigned (set up, clean up, communication).
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education & Experience:
- Due to the nature of Canada Summer Jobs Grant, applicants must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, who is 30 years of age or under
- Demonstrated experience with children and youth, with general knowledge of children’s behavior and developmental stages
- Able to handle difficult situations with maturity and with the ability to adapt
- First Aid/CPR Certificate
- Clear and current Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening

- Passionate for building loving relationships with youth and children inspired by the positive values of the Bible, The Salvation Army (Hope, Service, Dignity, and Stewardship), and Boundless Vancouver (relationships and transformation).
- A demonstration of openness to and respect for spiritual disciplines and participation in community faith practices.
- Able to problem solve on the spot, be resilient and flexible.
- Ability to take a leadership role and communicate in a group setting.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently and effectively with other leaders.
- A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision.
- Excellent administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Digital skills with Google Apps, Slack, and social media are an asset.
- Teaching skills in subjects for day camp participants is an asset.

- Clean drivers abstract.
- Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training.
