KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Arrive 15 – 20 minutes prior to shift to receive update and remain, when necessary, in crisis situation
- Read and initial Communication Log daily as part of a team effort to coordinate the plan and progress of clients
- Record in client file pertinent information concerning children’s programming
- Create and develop quality programs and activities for children
- Plan and implement appropriate age-based activities
- Represent the Centre at public speaking engagements, community groups and other areas as requested.
- Provide themed activities throughout the year for a diverse population
- Create a program calendar to inform the children and youth of activities
- Attend staff meetings, planning committees and staff development events
- Assist with all special events
- Assist with effective risk management; provide emergency first aid and file incident reports as required
- Role model appropriate behavior and attitude supporting growth and promoting positive behavior
- Ensure multipurpose room is free of articles that would be harmful to children and ensure equipment is in good condition to ensure safety
- Ensure all sports equipment relating to the multipurpose room is stored appropriately and secured
- Interact with parent in a supportive, non-judgmental manner
- May network with other community agencies for the benefit of the child and youth programming
- May provide transportation for children & youth to field trip sites
- Work with volunteer’s during children’s programs and outings
- Actively involved in on-going professional development
- Complete stats for child & youth groups and programs
- Perform other duties as assigned
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Read and adhere to the Centre’s Employee Handbook and Policy and Procedure Manual
- Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army
- Engage in formal Evaluations Sessions with Supervisor at 3 months during first year of employment and monthly supervisions thereafter
- Agree to and sign Confidentiality statement
- Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Adhere to the Centre’s Health and Safety Regulations
- Make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management
- Represent the organization in a professional manner and attitude
Perform other duties as required
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of keyboarding/manual record keeping, and running, walking, climbing stairs and standing
- Must have good physical stamina and be able to lift 20lbs
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a Child & Youth Worker Diploma, Social Sciences Field or Equivalent
- Valid WHMIS and First Aid and CPR certification
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with children & youth
- Program planning experience
- Knowledge and experience of child and youth related issues
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Strong organizational skills
- Understanding of Family Violence
- Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s License with clean drivers abstract
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
