Description
The Warehouse Worker works under the direction of the Thrift Store Supervisor and provides exceptional customer service, merchandising, tidy maintenance of the warehouse, sorting donations and creating a positive work environment.
The donations range from boxed goods, small appliances, bagged clothes, and various other donations such as dishes, crafts, books, etc.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations
- Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner.
- Assist donors with their contributions and determines usable condition, unload donations and place stock in appropriate warehouse location.
- Maintain the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, ensure compliance with quality standards; that all products are priced correctly as per store policy, properly recycling the donations that are not suitable for resale.
- Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
- Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations.
- Ensures electrical donations are in working order.
- Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
- Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
- Assist with store layout plans to attract customers; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
- Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory levels on the sales floor and remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
- Handle the merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation.
- Call when recycling trailer and garbage bins are needing to be picked up.
- Daily lockup check of all bins, trailers and storage containers.
- Retrieve clothing from storage trailer as required.
- Work with volunteers as assigned.
Communications
- Inform your supervisor of all customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.
Health & Safety
- Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage; no obstacles inside/outside the store).
- Maintains a neat, tidy and safe work area.
- Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom and other common areas; cleaning windows as required.
- Assist with the general upkeep and cleanliness of the property such as picking up litter, emptying garbage cans, cardboard disposal.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other position related duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Flexibility in work schedule is required
- 35 hours per week. Work schedule will vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays
- This job requires the ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and reach, bend, twist, and crouch frequently; work in a standing position for long periods of time.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of Secondary School
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Some related experience in warehouse processing or goods distribution would be a definite asset.
- Knowledge of lifting guidelines would be a definite asset.
- Brand awareness would be a definite asset.
- Reading skills.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Ability to consistently show a good personality and appearance.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the workday.
- Willing to help keep the building neat and clean.
- Requires good verbal (including telephone) communication skills.
- Ability to follow The Salvation Army Standards, Policies and Procedures in the operation of a Thrift Store.
- Ability to be confidential & trustworthy as the incumbent is looking out for the interest of the Thrift Store and The Salvation Army.
