KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read and initial Communication Log as part of a team effort to coordinate the plan and progress of clients
- Provides emotional and practical support to victims of family violence
- Record in client file pertinent information concerning client plan and progress
- Maintain caseload of clients requiring legal information
- Maintain an adequate Lawyer referral list
- Conduct referral services to other professional agencies and/or services
- Advocate for clients with Lawyers and Legal System
- Support Clients during lawyer’s appointments or court appearances when necessary
- Ensure transportation arrangements for clients attending legal appointments, police escorts and court
- Provide counselling on legal information
- Facilitate training on legal information and services to clients, students and volunteers when needed
- Adhere to safety plan for Legal Support Worker and legal volunteers
- Provide support and direction to legal volunteers
- Maintain supply of legal information pamphlets
- Liaises with other court related community services
- Prepares and submits monthly, quarterly and annual statistical reports to management/Salvation Army as required
- Knowledgeable to all processes, procedures and functions related to the court and institution
- Adhere to standards that are consistent the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army
- Participate in the Centre’s planning sessions
- Represent the Family Life Resource Centre at community committees as requested
- Represent FLFC at Court Advocate Coalition and Abuse Judicial Subcommittee
- Participate in organizing and participate in special events for clients
- Governed by The Salvation Army Honeychurch Family Life Resource Centre Policy and Procedure Manual
- Governed by Violence Against Women Act
- Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and the Residential Services Department.
- Participate fully and constructively in Staff Meetings, Team Meetings and in-service Training
- Engage in formal Evaluations Sessions with Supervisor at 3 months during first year of employment and monthly supervisions thereafter
- Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and the Employees Handbook
- Actively involved in ongoing professional development
- Agree to and sign Confidentiality statement
- Function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
- Adhere to and abide by the centre’s Health and Safety Regulations
- Make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management
- Represent the organization in a professional manner and attitude
- Performs other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- College Diploma or University Degree in Social Sciences or equivalent experience with specialized training in woman abuse
- Valid WHMIS and First Aid and CPR certification
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge and understanding of violence against women legal issues, family court, criminal, small claims court, landlord/tenant issues and immigration issues
- Knowledge of violence against women and children and the effects
- Knowledge and understanding and a commitment to anti-racism and anti-oppression
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s License
- Crisis Intervention and problem solving skills
- Good written/oral communication skills
- Ability to work cooperatively as a team member
- Ability to work independently
- Excellent organizational skills
- Basic Computer Skills
- Crisis intervention, problem solving and assessment skills
- Ability to be flexible in work hours to provide for client’s legal needs
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
HOURS: 40 hours per week
