Description
To assist in the operations of processing and selling donations and practice good stewardship of our donated resources.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Receive payment for sales and issue correct change; maintain and secure cash deposit and debit machine during your shift at cash.
- Participate in the end of day cash tally, provide daily sales reports to Store Supervisor and reconcile totals to receipts.
- Answer incoming telephone calls; welcome customers to the store and answer their inquiries; direct all customer complaints or concerns to the Store Supervisor.
- Assist customers in a friendly and courteous manner when assigned to the sales floor.
- Ensure attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
- Retrieve clothes from the change room or discarded elsewhere, re-hang and place back onto the sales floor.
- Sort all donated items, selecting what is worthy for sales floor, what is garbage, or what can be put into the recycled bags or used for rags.
- Price items following the Good, Better, Best, Exceptional pricing system.
- Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., clear fire exits, cleans spillage, and maintains store cleanliness).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Flexibility in work schedule is required
- 35 hours per week. Work schedule will vary from week to week and will include weekdays and/or Saturdays
- This job requires the ability to lift/move up to 30 lbs. and reach, bend, twist, and crouch frequently; work in a standing position for long periods of time.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of Secondary School
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Experience with cash registers, cash handling, and related processes and procedures, i.e., bank deposits, summary reports, etc., preferred
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Ability to balance cash receipts with recorded sales and make accurate change. Good mathematical ability.
- Ability to operate (or learn) a cash register.
- Ability to consistently show a good personality and appearance.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the workday.
- Willing to help keep the building neat and clean.
- Requires good verbal (including telephone) communication skills.
- Ability to follow The Salvation Army Standards, Policies and Procedures in the operation of a Thrift Store.
- Ability to be confidential & trustworthy as the incumbent is looking out for the interest of the Thrift Store and The Salvation Army.
