Description
The Sports Outreach Worker will utilize an innovative vehicle for reaching out to vulnerable, marginalized, at-risk youth. Implement, instruct, and coordinate a limited range of community-based programming. Create a safe and positive environment for youth to participate and enjoy sports and build their sense of belonging and purpose for their lives. Through the sports outreach program, Yorkwoods Community Church will endeavor to eliminate barriers and make cross-cultural evangelism accessible to un-churched children/youth between the ages of 13 to 16.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program
- Assist Corps Officer in operation of community-based sports programs for children and youth
- Assist with ensuring that ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and applied to all outreach program initiatives
- Promote community awareness of the sports outreach program and maintain a recognizable community presence
- Identify volunteer development/training needs and participate in development/training programs as required
- Develop effective working relationships and partnerships with community members, representatives of other departments, agencies, and co-workers
- Represent the Salvation Army and youth we serve at community meetings
- Contribute to the spiritual development of children/youth and young adults and their families within the church and community by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modeling appropriate attitudes and behaviors
- Be familiar with social services setting working with a multi-cultural vulnerable children and youth population
- Oversee outreach, recruitment, and enrollment of new participants into program
- Maintain collaborative working relationships with other professionals within and outside of the organization
- Follow up with children/youth who attend the outreach program, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the corps and its mission and ministries
Administration
- Maintain accurate and complete service data in the Outreach Record in a timely manner
- Ensure that the privacy and confidentiality of participants is maintained within established standards, policies, and procedures
Health and Safety
- Responsible for abiding by The Salvation Army’s Health & Safety Policies and Procedures and work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness
- Assist in ensuring volunteer safety, and adherence to all health and safety standards
- Ensure compliance with all COVID-19 protocols and requirements
- Perform other related duties
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:
- Completion of a 2-year Child and Youth Worker Certificate/Diploma or relevant field of study
- Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
- Ability and willingness to provide a valid Standard First Aid and CPR Certification
Experience:
- Minimum of two (2) years of related experience working with youth
- Some experience with community programming in a church setting would be an asset
- Some supervisory experience
Required Skills/Knowledge:
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to the life experiences and diverse needs, identities, and cultural backgrounds of children/youth
- Knowledge of the community including knowledge of local program and services for children/youth and local populations
- Knowledge and ability to coach players and teach sports skills
- Knowledge and skill in planning and delivering group programs
- A working knowledge of mental health and addiction issues
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle and insurance is required
- The incumbent will promote positive and supportive attitudes towards children/youth
- Act as an advocate and be a positive role model for the youth in the community
- Skill in establishing trusting relationships with children/youth
- Attention to detail, problem solving, conflict resolution and analytical skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
- Lead by example, by demonstrating a positive attitude, a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills, integrity, and adaptability
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics
- Ability to complete assignments and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
- Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:
- A clear vulnerable sector screening
- A clear internal abuse registry check
- A clean drivers abstract
- Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually
HOURS: 20 hours per week. Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekends as needed
