Provide translation, revision, adaptation and proofreading services in support of the Montreal and Outaouais campuses of McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. Provide professional and functional advice pertaining to the translating and adapting of documents from French to English, language editing, and communication activities in French. Research and write short articles and other communication materials in French.
Primary Responsibilities:
Translate and adapt from English to French (and occasionally from French to English) documents for medical courses, medical and health-science educational activities, administrative and human resources documents, articles, letters, promotional material, online publications, and various other types of texts. These documents vary in complexity and require knowledge of medical and scientific terminology as well as terminology specific to the health and academic communities. Requests can come from various administrative and academic units of both campuses of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
Coordinate translation done externally and revise texts submitted by external translators to ensure compliance with the prescribed quality standards and the established terminology.
Research and write short articles and other communication materials in French (and occasionally in
English). Proofread and do fact-checking to ensure accuracy of information. Assist in proofreading documents at all stages of production.
Interpret the information received and choose the most appropriate course of action for providing services that effectively meet clients’ needs and requirements.
Work closely with the other members of the translation team to ensure consistency and quality of the texts produced, and update the shared terminology databases and translation memories.
Contribute to the annual strategic planning, special projects, continuous quality improvement, and administration of the Faculty’s translation services at both campuses.
Liaise with key stakeholders of the Montreal Faculty and at the Outaouais Campus, including colleagues in the Communications Department, the offices of undergraduate medical studies and post-graduate medical education, and other Faculty and University offices, as required.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Superior skills in translating oral and written communications, mainly from English to French, especially involving medical and health science terminology. Excellent writing and communication skills in French and English. Demonstrated ability to work independently and respond quickly and effectively to requests for translation, revision and writing. Able to work effectively as part of a team. Initiative and excellent cooperative spirit. Intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, and a positive attitude towards feedback. Recognized sense of priorities, planning and organizing, and able to meet tight deadlines. Strong sense of professionalism. A client focus and excellent relationship-building skills. Discretion and diplomacy. Proven ability to work in a Microsoft environment for PC using the software required in a translation and communication environment. Proficient using computer-assisted translation software, e.g. memoQ. French and English, oral and written.
