The Pet Cancer Fund’s vision is to increase the life expectancy and improve the quality of life of pets diagnosed with cancer. Estimates suggest that 12M dogs and cats are developing cancer every year, roughly 6x the number of humans getting cancer yearly within North America. We need to do more for our furry friends, and we’re building a large team of distributed, animal-loving passionate volunteers to help them and their families.
Over the past 24 months, the organization has grown from the Founder’s vision to a team of over 250 volunteers working virtually across Canada, the United States, and another half dozen countries worldwide. As we work to become the leading organization in the field of animal cancers, we plan to more than double in size over the next 12 months. To continue on this trajectory, we’re searching for a highly qualified Vice-President of Human Resources to work closely with our CEO and executive team. That’s where and how you can help us.
About the Position
The Vice-President of Human Resources leads the establishment of the Pet Cancer Fund’s people strategies and leads the development and implementation of the organization’s human resources policies and programs. The VP acts as a trusted advisor to the executive team and ensures HR programs are aligned to and support the achievement of PCFs business objectives and promotes a high-level of volunteer engagement. The VP also leads the establishment of a change management framework and helps to lead PCF and its valued volunteers through various stages of organizational change.
Duties and Responsibilities
· Provide strategic advice and recommendations to the CEO and the executive team on all HR, people/volunteer, culture and organizational change matters and priorities with a view to maximizing organizational effectiveness, increasing volunteer retention and supporting a culture of excellence.
· Lead the establishment of long-term HR plans, encompassing a broad range of HR functions required to support an evolving, volunteer-based organization, ensuring plans and priorities are aligned to PCF’s strategic objectives and that the HR team is equipped to meet timelines.
· Lead the establishment of strategies and approaches for the organization and its volunteers to manage change such as organizational structure change, introduction of new teams/business lines, implementation of new tools/technology and introduction of business processes, etc. Collaborate with the executive team to plan for upcoming change, taking into consideration how the change will be measured, monitored and how change impacts will be assessed and communicated.
· Develop in-depth knowledge regarding best practices, regulations and guidelines that govern people management in a volunteer-based, not-for-profit organization and assess needs and implications as PCF continues to grow.
· Work in close collaboration with the executive team to build PCF’s volunteer value proposition statement with the objective of creating and strengthening a positive volunteer experience and reinforcing the organization’s brand and values.
· Coach, lead and develop a team of Human Resources professionals, including recruitment, organization design, organizational development and training specialists, through the provision of services to the organization in support of the full volunteer life cycle, ensuring these services bring business value to all departments across the organization.
About You
You understand the importance of the human resources of an organization, particularly in a volunteer context, and aim to support the achievement of the organization’s objectives through its most valuable asset: its people. You are passionate about the delivery of high-quality HR services and programs and take a holistic view of the talent management lifecycle. You are a strategic thinker and work best in a collaborative, team setting that is collectively seeking to grow a new, ever-changing organization. You have:
· A Bachelor’s degree in human resources (Master’s degree would be considered a strong asset);
· Strong knowledge of leading HR management principles and practices (in a not-for-profit setting would be considered a strong asset);
· 10+ years’ experience of strategic HR planning;
· Knowledge of change management practices;
· Significant experience leading the delivery of various HR services and in working in close collaboration with business leaders to ensure HR services meet organizational needs;
· Effective project management skills;
· Strong communication skills;
· A solid understanding of the elements that affect workplace culture (experience leading in a virtual/remote setting would be considered a strong asset);
· Strong management and leadership skills and a proven ability to develop talent across an organization.
