Vice-Provost Academic

Job Summary

Reporting to the Provost and Vice-President Academic, the Vice-Provost Academic (VPA) is responsible for facilitating and supporting the work of the Office of the Provost.

The appointment of Vice-Provost Academic will be for an initial five-year term, renewable for another five years, following review. Ideally, the appointee will take office on September 1, 2021.

Duties and Responsibilities

Oversight of the following administrative units: Office of the Registrar; Office of Institutional Research and Integrated Planning; Office of Indigenous Affairs; and Office of Program Development and Quality Assurance;

Supporting the implementation and monitoring of the University of the Fraser Valley’s new Integrated Strategic Plan entitled: IYAQAWTXW: House of Transformation.

Leading the University’s strategic direction in support of lifelong learning;

Providing strategic oversight of UFV’s Strategic Enrolment Management Plan;

Providing strategic oversight and support for UFV’s Indigenization Plan: Lálém ye mestíyexw;

Supporting a community of professional practice amongst the Associate Deans at UFV;

Coordinating the University’s undergraduate program reviews and program development processes;

Coordinating academic policy reviews;

Assisting with faculty collective bargaining;

Liaising with the Department of Human Resources regarding faculty performance and tenure and promotion processes;

Coordinating and reviewing partnerships with external organizations (both domestic and international);

Communicating and interpreting academic policies to Faculties and other academic administrative units, and advising on the administration of such policies;

Among other activities, this will involve:
Participating at a senior level and chairing committees dealing with the University’s academic planning process; such committees could include standing committees of the Senate;

Generally participating in and supporting the work of the Provost’s office, with respect to the activities of Senate and the Board of Governors;

Acting as designate/delegate on behalf of the Provost/VPA in a wide variety of venues.

Qualifications

The Search Committee acknowledges that no single individual is likely to meet all of the following criteria in equal measure; nevertheless, candidates for the position of Vice-Provost Academic will be expected to possess:

A post-secondary degree commensurate to the level of Doctorate

A record of accomplishment as a scholar and teacher, as well as a proven track record in post-secondary administration;

Demonstrated leadership ability and the desire and capability for academic imagination and innovation;

Proven dedication and commitment to student-focused learning;

A willingness to embrace the diversity of a regionally-focused university with comprehensive academic programs ranging from certificate to bachelors and master degrees, including developmental programs, and innovative trades and technology education;

Experience in the administration of collective agreements;

Experience in faculty and staff performance reviews;

Experience in managing budgets;

Experience in strategic planning and implementation;

Superior problem-solving, decision-making and communication skills;

A record of being responsive to the opinions of others, and a demonstrated capacity to interact positively with persons representing a wide range of interests;

A strong commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, and a commitment to work collaboratively with individuals in a highly diverse population;

A strong commitment to advancing Indigenization; and,

A reputation for integrity, openness, and the ability to engender trust in interpersonal relationships.
