VOCATIONAL INSTRUCTOR

The Vocational Rehabilitation Services Department provides a full range of Supported Employment services through vocational assessment, employment/academic counselling, skills training, work readiness programs, job development and job coaching services within a recovery-oriented team environment.

Reporting to the Clinical Manager of Vocational Rehabilitation and Therapeutic Recreation, the Vocational Instructor will work within the vocational services department to provide a full range of employment supports for both inpatients and outpatients. The successful candidate will be responsible for individualized employment planning, and goal setting, liaising with employers and other community partners, job coaching and development, employment support and retention.

Responsibilities:

  • Engages clients and establishes trusting, collaborative relationships directed toward the goal of competitive employment in community job settings.
  • Assists clients in obtaining information about their benefits (e.g., ODSP, OW, EI) and how they will be affected by employment in order for clients to make good decisions about employment opportunities.
  • Refers clients to community resources as needed.
  • Assesses clients’ vocational functioning on an ongoing basis utilizing background information and work experiences.
  • Discusses client’s preference for disclosure of psychiatric status to employers and with the client’s permission, provides education and support to family members.
  • Conducts job development and job search activities directed toward positions that are individualized to the interests and uniqueness of the people on his/her caseload, following the principles and procedures of IPS supported employment.
  • Maintains regular employer contacts to learn about the needs of the business, describe supports offered by the program and describe client strengths that are relevant to the position.
  • Participates in meetings with mental health treatment team and communicates individually with team members between meetings in order to coordinate and integrate vocational services into mental health treatment.

  • Post-Secondary education in Vocational Rehabilitation, or related field required
  • Registration with the College of Vocational Professionals (CVRP), Vocational Rehabilitation Association of Canada (VRA) or another professional college is preferred.
  • Min 2 years vocational experience specifically working with persons afflicted with mental health/addictions issues or barriers to education/employment (preferably in a hospital setting)
  • Strong knowledge and commitment to the principles of Recovery, Individual Support and Placement model and evidence-based practices of Supported Employment
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Disability Support Program
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong knowledge of assessment, employment planning, accommodations, current labour market trends, job development and job coaching
  • Current CPR – HCP and valid driver’s license is required
  • Meditech experience an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
