18.11 – 22.16 per hour (Category 4)

18.65 – 22.79 per hour (Category 5)

Overall Accountability

The Education Assistant II aids in educational, behavioral and/or health related programming for students with diverse learning needs as directed by the teacher and supervised by the Principal. This includes Educational Support (ES) II, Starting Points, Next Steps, Observation classes, Rural Diverse Learning and Transition Programs within Calgary Catholic schools. The Education Assistant II is a member of the student’s learning team. The Noon Hour Assistant provides general assistance, direction and supervision to students.

Specific Accountabilities

Collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team providing one-on-one support for Learner Support and/or other support plan goals and objectives

Fosters a safe, calm and positive learning environment

Compiles student data through observation

Prepares materials and duplicates classroom material in support of students with special needs

Participates in ongoing professional development related to the learning profiles of students in the congregated program

Assists with student self-care (dressing, toileting/diapering, medical needs, etc.)

Assists students with anxiety and mental health challenges

Manages inappropriate behavior, including implementation of physical restraint techniques when required

Performs disinfecting and general housekeeping, when required

Assists students during school celebrations, liturgical events, services and attendance at Mass at local parishes

Supervises students in the lunchroom, hallways and playground

Oversees students operating the school store

Assists in the classroom, office or library as required

Qualifications

Category 4: High school diploma

Category 5: Education Assistant Certificate, or High school diploma and the equivalent of a minimum of one (1) year post-secondary course study

Demonstrated successful experience working with special needs students

May require any of the following depending upon assignment:
Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid certificates

lifting techniques

rehabilitation experience

Ability to deal with the social/emotional, medical needs and mental health challenges of working with groups of children who are often active and demanding

Ability to use assistive or augmented technologies

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Physically able to meet all physical demands for this position (see attached)
