Description
The Recreation Programmer collaborates with all staff to implement and evaluate age appropriate therapeutic recreational, social, educational and Special Event programs which incorporates the needs, interests and preferences of the clients through individual or group program interventions.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Demonstrate effective working relationships within a team environment and a willingness to work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers and members of the Winterberry/Meadowlands Church
- Assists with the daily supervision of clients, visitors and guests
- Provides supervision and direction to program volunteers and placement students
- Completes all related documentation and evaluations for students and program volunteers
- Maintains accurate participation records, completes required client documentation in accordance to established standards
- Maintains the development and maintenance of an Entertainment Resource Manual featuring potential program resources and contacts
- Responsible for the content, layout, printing and distribution of the monthly calendar
- Participates in the development of program standards as stated in the Salvation Army Manual for Accreditation
- Is a member of the leadership team; attends all staff meetings
- Program planning, co-ordination, implementation and evaluation of recreational, social, educational, and seasonal theme days
- Collaboratively plans special events and spiritual programs.
- Demonstrates well-developed and effective group leadership skills in a small or large group function/setting
- Assists with detailing sequential multi program components ensuring all necessary arrangements and required documentation completed for assigned programs
- Contributes to the development and coordination of annual strategic long-range programs and fundraising initiatives
- Assists with client intake and admission procedures and assists with individual client orientation
- Occasionally assists clients with Activities of Daily Living while in the program
- Monitors individual functional status and reports concerns to the Client Services Coordinator for follow up
- Perform other position related duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 40 hours per week.
- Normal hours of work: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday
- Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Some flexibility in scheduling required, some weekend and evening work may be required.
- Working environment is typically in the office in generally agreeable conditions.
- Normal work location is at: 300 Winterberry Drive, Stoney Creek, Ontario

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Certifications:· Recreation Therapy Diploma, or equivalent degree
· Montessori training
· Certified in First Aid/CPR
· Certified in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset.
· Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
· Must provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
· May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
· NOTE: Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered
Experience:
· Experience in the planning and provision of Recreational Programs (at least two years) for the elderly in a Community Program or Long-Term Care Facility
· Advanced training and/or previous experience working with individuals with a progressive dementia or cognitive impairment.
Required Skills/Knowledge:
· Self-motivated and disciplined: strong oral and written communication skills
· Experience/Working knowledge in Word and Excel
· Interest and previous experience or skills in crafts, music, art, fitness, etc.
· Demonstrates proficient use of audio-visual equipment. (sound system, CD player, projection unit, etc.)
· Demonstrated leadership skills
· Sound knowledge of Community Social Services
