Instructor position. The new SPP, which is offered in partnership by both Mount Allison University and
the New Brunswick Community College, is designed to support academically-qualified students from
non-English backgrounds in their transition to full-time study at both institutions. The SPP features a
blend of level-specific academic English and academic skills courses, as well as a foundational and
introductory set of co-curricular modules and activities to introduce international students to the history,
culture, and geography of Atlantic Canada. Students will transition from the SPP to full-time,
unconditional study once they have successfully completed the SPP program requirements in order to
meet their respective institution’s language requirements for unconditional admission starting in
September.
More information about the program and its structure can be found at mta.ca/englishpathways
Reporting to the Manager, International Pathway Programs, the SPP Instructor will be responsible for
delivering level-specific language and academic skills classes from June until August. Classes will be
offered 3 hours/day for a total of 15 hours/week of instruction time. The SPP Instructor will be
responsible for an additional 5 hours/week of cross-cultural and co-curricular programming. All classes
for the 2021 Summer Pathway Program will be delivered virtually.
The Instructor will also be responsible for facilitating co-curricular learning opportunities and activities
away from the classroom that aim to introduce students to life and culture in Atlantic Canada. Ordinarily,
these learning opportunities and activities would occur in-person. For the 2021 Summer Pathway
Program, these learning opportunities will have to be modified and organized virtually.
While a foundational curriculum and activity suggestions are provided for the 12 weeks of the program,
the Instructor is responsible for preparing lessons and course materials, grading assignments, facilitating
student engagement and participation, and assessing students’ progress in the program in order to advise
Mount Allison and NBCC about students’ eligibility to progress into full-time studies before the start of
classes in September.
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree, or equivalent experience, in English, Education,
Linguistics, TESOL, or EAL teaching/learning. In addition, experience as a Bridging Program instructor
with EAL teaching experience is required. Experience working with EAL students in a university setting
and within a diverse student population is an asset. They will also have excellent interpersonal,
communication, and technology skills in order to successfully engage and support students learning
remotely.
