The Assistant Director of Financial Accounting reports to the Director of Accounting and assists with managing, supervising, and leading the day-to-day operation of the finance staff within the Territorial Headquarters of The Salvation Army. This position will assist in delivery and development of financial accounting services and solutions for The Salvation Army divisions, units, and ministries, and contribute to the strategic planning and execution of innovative accounting systems and solutions. The successful candidate must be a self-motivated professional with extraordinary interpersonal skills and demonstrated success in working collaboratively and strongly influencing the overall program within The Salvation Army.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Accountabilities:
Provides oversight and management assistance in the provision of financial accounting services for finance department mission partners:
- Assists the Director in managing the day-to-day activities and functions of the financial accounting group as well as their development and training.
- Work with various finance department mission partners including ministry units, divisional and territorial headquarters departments to enhance and establish accounting procedures and processes.
- Ensure that all general ledger reconciliations and standard reports (internal and external) are completed accurately and on time.
- Ensure that month end tasks are, and accruals are completed to facilitate a five (5) day month-end close for all mission partners.
- Creates strong relationship with divisions and ministry units by developing an in-depth understanding of business processes, issues, and automation requirements within each group.
- Manages the distribution of workload within the accounting group to ensure effective and efficient workflow operations.
- Ensure various tax rebates and government remittances are processes on a timely basis for each mission partner entity to maximize cash flow to the unit.
Provides process and system development oversight:
- Assists the Director with the development and maintenance of the following systems as they apply to accounting including Agresso, TEM, and T3010 software.
- Assists the Director to ensure that system interfaces are properly designed and maintained.
- Responsible for ongoing review of practices, processes, and technology to identify opportunities for continued improvements in efficiency and effectiveness.
- Working with the Director, perform research as required, especially when changes in legislation are announced, to implement and manage the required changes.
Provides year-end audit, internal audit preparation and reporting services for finance department mission partners:
- Reviews year-end trial balances and prepares final entries to close accounting records for the year, ensuring year-end accruals, allocations and eliminations are correctly applied.
- Prepare draft statements and notes for presentation to external auditors.
- Prepare for internal audits and respond to inquiries.
- Preparation of annual charitable returns required for all mission partners on an annual basis.
- Review and analyze mission partner monthly financial statements, communicating observations and recommendations to applicable mission partners.
- Prepare quarterly/annual government filing documents on behalf of mission partner entities as requested.
Provides advisory services to mission partners regarding the financial management of finance department mission partners:
- Receives and resolves inquiries from ministry units, divisional headquarters, and territorial headquarters departments.
- Arrange regular recurring consultation with clients to provide interpretation and answer questions on financial statements
- Provide financial management advice regarding cash flow, target reserves, and budgetary variance analysis
- Develop an understanding of clients, always treating them with respect and courtesy.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of an undergraduate degree in accounting
- Completion of a CPA accounting designation.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Three to five years of related accounting/business work experience.
- Non-profit experience is an asset.
- An in-depth understanding of integrated, cross-functional system environment.
- Exceptional knowledge of the key business processes associated with accounting and financial management
- Excellent supervisory and leadership experience
- Experience in systems implementation
- Experience in automated workflow environments and systems
