Requires about 7.5 or more hours of intermittent standing or walking in a standard workday

Ability to repeatedly bend or stoop to floor level shelves and able to reach upper shelves with use of a stool or a ladder when necessary

Sitting may be required only intermittently and occasionally

Ability to make quick and thoughtful decisions

Basic computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, Internet)

Healthy balance of patience and energy

Police vulnerable sector check (required upon hire)

As this role is funded through Canada Summer Jobs,

To be eligible, youth must:

  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment*;

Job Synopsis This Contract position is responsible for maintaining a high quality of customer service while keeping up in a fast paced, high capacity setting. There are 2 roles, both 10 weeks long at 35 hours/week.

The Associate’s assignments will mainly be in the retail area, including cashier: assisting on cash; providing excellent customer service; issuing refunds when needed, merchandising the floor: maintaining cleanliness; prepping shop for seasonal displays; creating feature displays; putting out priced donations from the workroom, assisting with cash duties as it pertains to the retail area: creating and counting floats, preparing daily reconciliations.

The Associate will also assist in the workroom area: as a receiver, cleaning, hanging and pricing donations for sale.

The Associate will work in close collaboration with all of the Co-ordinators/Managers of the shop and is accountable to the General Manager.

Challenges

Key Responsibilities General

  • Serve as a brand advocate and ambassador for MCC mission and values in every interaction with customers and donors
  • Support Co-ordinators/Managers as needed to meet the demands of daily operations
  • Assist with special events and projects as needed
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers
  • Greet customers and donors, respond to questions and provide outstanding customer service.

Workroom and Retail

  • Work with management, staff and volunteers in the operation of the store ensuring teamwork, desirable working environment while creating a friendly, welcoming and profitable retail shop with an emphasis on developing a strong, positive first impression for customers
  • Operate Point of Sale terminal and handle cash, gift cards and card payments with complete accuracy
  • Provide excellent customer service in retail area and congenial interactions with valued volunteers
  • Ability to tactfully handle objections and challenges from customers
  • Unpack and price merchandise
  • Stock sales floor and maintain displays
  • Work alongside and support volunteers in the retail area and workroom as required
  • Participate in weekly colour rotation of all merchandise
  • Take proactive actions in maintaining clean work spaces that meet health & safety standards in the workroom and retail floor
  • Assist with light cleaning to ensure immaculately clean retail environment (e.g. sweeping, dusting displays, etc.) and tidy workroom
  • Some evening and weekend shifts are required.
  • Assist in the ongoing organization of receiving area, workroom, and seasonal storage
  • Sort, clean and price donations in various departments as needed

Other

  • Assist with kitchen responsibilities( set up, clean up, etc.)
  • Share the news about MCC and MCC Thrift Shops in the community
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned
  • Participate in MCCO Orientation
  • Participate in a local faith community, being willing to use personal gifts within this community and model nonviolent peacemaking through respectful interactions with others.
  • Maintain a high level of integrity, reflecting Christian respect and Christ’s unconditional love to those with whom you work, including colleagues, partner agencies, the homeless and marginalized
  • Answer inquiries about MCC from constituency and general public, communicate MCC’s values.
