Overview
This position is responsible for completing grease trap inspections, communicating with business owners and staff on the importance of grease trap maintenance, recording information for bylaw enforcement and reporting, and disseminating information to and collecting information from the general public as it relates to matters of municipal bylaws.
Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Contacting businesses to determine their operational status;
- Conducting site visits and performing inspections on grease traps;
- Educating operators and business owners on fats, oil, and grease (FOG) management;
- Filling out forms and log sheets, collating counts and reporting work activity;
- Data entry to update City records, permits and license tracking software;
- Distributing information to the public in the form of handouts and leaflets specific to municipal bylaws; and
- Other duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Must possess sound knowledge of applicable municipal bylaws.
- Knowledge related to basic record keeping.
- Ability to interpret and explain basic regulations, answer general inquiries related to municipal regulations, FOG, and provide recommendations or referrals.
- Ability to deal both tactfully and firmly with the public and possess the capacity to deal professionally with outside agencies, City staff & other officials.
- Ability to provide effective customer service and to diffuse hostility in an effective manner; consistently maintain a professional and diplomatic demeanour.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal staff and the general public.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to exercise professionalism and tact.
- Ability to work both independently and interdependently while exercising sound judgement and initiative.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, work well under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Ability to deal with stressful situations.
- Ability to accurately perform mathematical calculations.
- Intermediate skill with Microsoft Office programs including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have an understanding of the City’s geography, including all main roadways within and adjoining the City.
- Experience with Amanda 7 and Tempest for permitting and information tracking.
- This is a uniformed position, uniform will be provided.
- Ability to successfully clear a Police Information Check (PIC).
- Class 5 driver’s licence is mandatory.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by post-secondary coursework in customer service, conflict resolution, sales, time management and Microsoft applications.
- Minimum one (1) year of related experience, preferably in a municipal environment. An equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience will be considered.
- Proven intermediate skill level in MS Office programs is required.
Working Conditions:
The work involved requires contact with a diverse range of people, often encountering difficult situations. Physical effort is required
(walking, running, lifting, climbing). Work is performed in all weather conditions, both on foot and while driving a vehicle.
